That's all too hard... But basically, Organic food is "home grown" without pestercides so there are no chemicals, which can only be good for you.

As for taste, i have grown, pumpkin, cucumber, sweetcorn, beans, snow peas, cherry tomatoes and off course herbs. I moved and work too much now, but a sunny little side of the home is all you need. But the taste is hard to describe, there is taste, they seem jucyier, sweeter, just better, reminds me to start with a few this Spring.

It's also fun to see what you've achieved, if you like to be an achiever and it's way handy to just walk outside and grab a few bits of spinich, basil and tomotoes, off course saves money as well.

Default There is much more to the story here....

Oh boy. I used to think, forget paying those high prices for the organic until I learned another important factor. The pesticides and chemicals that are used for farming theses days is just one aspect. They are large companies that farm the land over and over without tilling the soil and replacing the ever important nutrients to the soil that make food nutricious. Organic farmers process the soil and reintroduce the nutrients via the tilling therfore organic food is what I call food and all the other stuff is....well, I'm not sure you can even call it food. This is why I buy organic as much as possible. You can get a list of vegetables that are really important to always buy organic like strawberries and peaches. Oh and what about all those foods that are being genetically modified. That's a whole other topic.

I dont think you can differenciate between types of organic food... organic food is organic, like other posters said, it basically means no pesticides are used and everything is grown naturally.

I dont neccessarily buy organic especially, i'll go the the local market and buy fruit and vegetables from there, the taste difference is phenomenal... i bought a regular cucumber from the supermarket the other day - silly idea, it tasted like plastic. Yea, sure organic is pricer, but for me its completely worth it for taste and nutritional benefits.

In something like half of the cases of autism, switching to a diet free of pesticides, e-numbers and other manmade nasties completely reverses the autism...

    Or so I hear.

the problem is, the term "organic" is abused. because the rules for what constitutes it, (from the government) is too loose. company's can say we don't use "pesticides A and B" so we're organic. What they don't tell you is that no one uses "pesticide A and B". I would research where you get your organic products from and than decide.
Also, in my opinion its more important to focus on sustainable organic (which means its local/500 or so mile radius..) Supporting local farmers. Really how "organic" (or "green" for that matter) is an apple that's been flown in from Fuji?

But as someone else mentioned, the meats and dairy products are probably more of a concern now days than veggies/fruits...

The problem with organic foods is that it could only feed 1/3 of the world's population because, in order to grow the food, we need the fertilizers and whatnot to make sure all 300+ million of us in the states, and 6+ billion around the world can eat.

The only real benefit is the flavor. As far as meat is concerned, try to buy products that are free of antibiotics. You find a lot of antibiotics used in chicken farms because they're prone to a lot of diseases.

For the most part, you're safe buying stuff that's not organic. Just stay away from the food shipped in from China. Especially their seafood (farmed in, basically, raw sewage).

Organic foods are the best way to make sure you are eating healthy. According to Wikipedia, the biggest study of organic food completed in 2007 found that organic fruit and vegetables contain up to 40% more antioxidants than conventional equivalents. There is definitely a difference. If there is a choice of organic foods I would go for organic. There is a difference not only in the nutritive value but also in the taste too. When choosing health supplements I like to choose products that are made from organic, and natural foods. Can anyone give me their favorite organic health supplements?

Certainly it tastes better. I pretty much grew up on it and buy what is availible and affordable. Somethings I know to be heavily pesticided I buy only organic, such as berries and bananas and milk. At the Farmer's Market the farm I buy from she farms organically but isn't certified - too expensive.

In my personal experience with allergies, I was apparently reacting to hormones and additives in meats and dairy products, it can be hard to pin down. Many health care providers believe the reasons girls are starting puberty earlier and earlier is the hormones in meat and dairy. Scary. What else is this stuff doing to us? Bodies decay rates have changed due to all the preservatives we consume.

I support my local organic farms because they're overall better environmentally: No shipping costs, they don't use wax to polish their fruits and veggies just for show, and they're free of pesticides.

As far as meat goes, I think organic meat and milk are not only better, but SAFER. The factory farming meat industry is really terrifying. They typically don't use antibiotics properly, so the bacteria or diseases the animals may have evolve, then we eat it. It's why food poisoning is so much more prominent in meat, because the industry is irresponsible. I'm genuinely scared about the industrial meat market.. I'm trying to convert my whole family to local/organic, for their safety really, but I can't win :[ Did you know that in February of last year, there was a huge 143 million pound beef recall because a big company in California sold meat from cows who were severely diseased? Most of it had already been sold to schools and consumed by the time they craked down on it.

    Ack! Scary.

Oganic milk is amazing, because it last for literally 40 something days. Since they don't use antibiotics on the cows, they're required to super-pasteurize it, which generic milk companies don't do because it's expensive.
