I'm 52 and I started getting eczema when I was 35 and it was two botches on
my stomach...little ones.By age 40 it had taken over about 60% of my body and finally went all over my face and its a terrible thing to have. I just use corticosteroids.

LazySundays, try not to give you child too much sugar as it's known to help 'feed' the eczema.

Hi, I know you have had several replies to your post but I completely understand where you are coming from. I was devastated when I found out I had eczema last year and it spread to the point where I couldn't hide it anymore. I didn't want to take the steroid cream the doctors gave me. To cut a long story short I changed my diet and cut out sugar, including refined white flour and it's ALL gone in less than 2weeks!!! I was elated so I do hope that you find a solution too. Don't give up )

    Hi HealthyBean,
I happy for you!!!I don't think you know how lucky you are to be able to cut out just 1 item (sugar) and get such great results in less than a month. Isn't it amazing how sugar can cause so many problems!!

I was a Biochem major and have had minor bouts of eczema. It is a genetic predisposition. You are susceptible to the little buggers that cause the skin changes. That part you can not change.

If you can reduce your stress that will help. Also eating a lot of protein helps, especially protein rich in omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. Your body uses the amino acids in these proteins in both the immune system (which is depressed during stress) and in cell rebuilding. The salt baths help and so does slight sun exposure (kills the microbes)

    Hi All,
Sea Salt and Sunlght seem to do wonders for Eczema. I've not too long returned from a holiday in Egypt and both the combination of bathing in the Red Sea and the wonderful sunny climate have had a very positive effect on my skin. Also the lack of stress whilst i've been away must have also helped.

    Keys with fighting eczema:
allergies: if it makes you itch more when you put it on, stay away.
If you eat it and you seem to get more eczema two days later... don't do that.

Go to the doc, get some steroid cream or elidel (if you have it on your face at all, elidel is wonderful). Use it when you get out of the shower, then put lotion over it.

LOTION is your best friend. Eucerin's calming cream is really wonderful for that. I hear lubriderm works great for other people too, but personally I think it burns.

A lot of times citric acid is a big factor with diet and eczema. Personally, if I drink a box of orange juice, two days later I break out like crazy.

Things with oatmeal are good for when you're going crazy with the symptoms.

Cortizone 10 cream, is practically worthless in my opinion.

Hot showers really really mess up your skin. I don't know exactly why, but it will make your eczema a lot worse.

Just be really on top of things for a good two weeks, and then you can slack off and learn how far you can push the diet or things you come in contact with. The only thing that you can't be a slacker about is lotion. Just put it on every day once you get it under control and you should generally be good.
If it does flare up, use some steroid creme or elidel and then continue.
There's no cure, and it is a constant pain in the butt.

    I am sorry : (

Also... the sun thing that the user above me mentioned... works GREAT.
Certainly you wouldn't want to tan all of the time, but one good tan at the beginning of summer makes a huge difference for like 3 months. Tanning beds are also an option, but keep in mind... cancer.

Also, if you use the steroid creams (and I think elidel too) you can't really go out and tan because it causes some type of bad reaction on your skin. I personally have never pushed it, but it says it right on the prescription label to not do that.

Speaking of sun... use good sunscreen. The cheaper stuff will probably itch.
    Neutrogena = sunscreen god.

I've had a few flare ups of eczema in my time, I once had huge patches of it on my face which was pretty embarrassing. After trying all the stuff the GP gave me and it not working I bought a tube of Calendula (Marigold) Ointment for the really dry bits and Calendula Cream for the not so dry bits and it cleared it all up within a few days. The cream is very soothing and stops itching. If I get a flare up now I reach for the Calendula cream every time and get rid of it before it becomes a problem.
