Default Getting rid of spots

I have some quite nasty-looking spots that aren't acne, but they are quite big, red and sometimes sore if they are the lurking-under-the-surface type. I think that they're hormone related as they crop up at certain times each month.

I used to use witch hazel as that reduced the redness but that's not having an effect anymore. I've tried most of spot treatment sticks, creams and gels that you can get but again, no joy. Has anyone got any tips for making the spots look smaller and less red?
