    Default Laser Light Therapy FAQ

My name is Dr. Thomas Wright. I am a board-certified phlebologist, a certified vascular sonographer, and the medical director of Laser Lipo and Vein Center. Here are some answered questions about laser light therapy. Hope they can help!

Q: I have spider veins on multiple areas of my body, and I'd really like to have more that just the ones on my legs treated. Can spider veins on the face/neck area, hands, and arms be treated, and what procedure do you recommend?
A: Spider veins of the face are usually treated with laser light therapy but some are often treated better with sclerotherapy. Spider veins of the hands and legs tend to do better with sclerotherapy but some tiny reddish vessels are well treated by a cutaneous laser or light treatment.

Q: My husband has lots of tiny little veins on his nose and cheeks. What are the best ways to treat these, making them look less red and noticeable?
A: These can be treated with either a laser or IPL (Intense pulsed light). Depending on the severity and the amount he may need more than one treatment.

Q: Does laser light therapy involve a laser being put in the vein or is the laser shone on the vein externally?
A: Lasers are used for both. Endovenous laser ablation means that the laser is put into the vein. External lasers or IPL can be used to treat the veins from outside the skin. The pigments in the skin absorb the light formthe device and that is out in the sun.

    Default light therapy remove tattoos??

Q: Can laser light therapy be used for tattoo removal?

A: A Q switch laser can break down the pigment form tattoos and be better for some colors than others. It can be painful and require many treatments. Not all tattoos can be removed with this laser especially tattoos with yellow or green pigments.

Lately, in my community I've seen several tattoo removal places open. Any idea how effective they are?

My boyfriend has had a few removed and they are completely gone and you can't tell at all. He has one that he had one treatment on and it's barely there, one more and the entire thing would be gone and there's no scaring.

Tattoo removal is a procedure that needs some thought before diving in. The way it works is that the laser selectively targets and destroys the tattoo pigment without damaging the tissue around the tattoo. This significantly reduces the amount of scarring that occurs during the removal process. Due to the fact that the lasers are absorbed differently by different colors, a skilled physician can tune the laser at the proper depth and color of your tattoo for effective removal. This works well for multi-level and intricate tattoos.

    How Long Does It Take?

Most laser removal procedures take between 15-40 minutes. You will need multiple procedures. Typically this depends on the amount of color and depth of the tattoo. Typically you will have up to eight visits to completely remove the tattoo.

What Can I Expect After The Procedure?

Usually the area is red and looks like it is sun burned for up to three weeks. You may also notice some bruising, and some bleeding is not uncommon. The area will be sensitive for several weeks, and you may notice that your skin texture will change but will heal. During the healing process you will want to stay out of the sun. You may not notice huge improvements until after you have had several visits.

How Effective Is Laser Tattoo Removal?

The success really depends on a couple of factors. The first is how new the tattoo is. The newer tattoos are usually harder to remove, and take more sessions due to the density of the ink. If you want to have success in removal, you need to be committed to going in for multiple procedures. For larger areas it may take up to 12 treatments to totally eliminate. You don’t want to spend some money and discontinue the treatments only to find you still have remnants of your old body art.
