    Default Very Unusual Mole Activity

My boyfriend has had a small mole on his cheekbone the entire time I've known him (going on three years, now), but recently he was scratching an itch on his face, and he said he felt the mole partially separate from his face.

After this happened, it was still attached, but was more like a flat flap that could be pressed back "into place." The skin on its surface began peeling a few times, like skin might after an angry pimple dries out.

Then it became more of a raised bump than a flap, and continued to dry out and peel, and THEN it turned into a sort of an unsettling sea anemone-type of surface; lots of tiny, tiny finger-like strands. The area where it is attached to his face seems to be continuing to shrink and we feel like it wants to fall off, but this unusual surface texture has me a bit worried. All of this took place within the last month to month-and-a-half.

I've googled and googled and I haven't been able to find anything similar to this situation, so my questions are: 1) Is this something to be genuinely concerned about? I tend to be a bit of a hypochondriac, and that extends a bit to my boyfriend, so I don't know if I'm getting worried over nothing or not. 2) If we do need to worry about it, and it DOES fall off on its own, do we still need to worry about it, or is the problem over?

I've just never seen or heard of a mole turning into little finger-like strands in my entire life. I'm asking here because he tends to be pretty reluctant to see a doctor, while I tend to be over-ready to see a doctor. =P

    Thank you in advance...

I think you need to have your boyfriend checked out by a doctor asap about that mole. It might be just fine, but there is the chance that it could be melanoma, and that needs to be treated immediately!

The Skin Cancer Foundation has a checklist of things to watch out for when it comes to moles, if any of these ring true with your boyfriend's mole (and it sounds like it does), then he needs to make an appointment with his doctor immediately. Below is the list of warning signs (The ABCDE's as the foundation calls them) taken directly from The Skin Cancer Foundation's website:

    Asymmetry
If you draw a line through this mole, the two halves will not match.

    Border
The borders of an early melanoma tend to be uneven. The edges may be scalloped or notched.

    Color
Having a variety of colors is another warning signal. A number of different shades of brown, tan or black could appear. A melanoma may also become red, blue or some other color.

    Diameter
Melanomas usually are larger in diameter than the size of the eraser on your pencil (1/4 inch or 6 mm), but they may sometimes be smaller when first detected.

    Evolving
Any change — in size, shape, color, elevation, or another trait, or any new symptom such as bleeding, itching or crusting — points to danger.

You aren't overreacting. Get him to the doctor ASAP, melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer - if caught early its 100% treatable, if it isn't caught early enough it can spread to other parts of the body where its hard to treat, if not becoming fatal. Even if it isn't cancer, you're better off safe than sorry.

Actually, I am also facing the same problem which you are facing. I have 5 moles on my face but small and I tried a home based paste and within 2 weeks it’s no more. These moles are not properly removed but it doesn’t create any problem.

Totally get that checked out. I have moles on my back that my husband obsessively checks, THANK GOD, I had to have one removed last month - Totally get that checked out..... and don't be scared either. The procedure (and I hope you don't need it) isn't terrible.... and it can save your life. They may be small, but it's nothing to joke around with!
