    Hi, ItsASecret

    Thanks for your reply.

Yes, they have medical qualifications but that does not mean all will be good or have lots of experience. That is a fact as I have been a patient on so many occasions and have experienced such. That is why I am reserved and asking questions. There is no harm in doing that and it is much better than just assuming. It is ok in doing so if you have not had bad experiences but I have with many things. Personally I think I will ask around as to who is the best at such a procedure and go with that.

I agree on age, age should not really come into it as there can be young ones that have loads of experience, etc. It is a little more complicated than judging experience by age. They are all different.

They give painkillers for that I would have thought as I would be in their care so they are responsible for my aftercare too.

My dentist said he would numb it first (local anaesthetic). As regards gag reflex, the tooth of mine is right at the back. Did you actually have a wisdom tooth out and did it make your gag reflex come? Just wondering...

The problem with his estimate of six months is that he has not even thought or taken into consideration my front teeth being pushed forward as I had terrible sticking out teeth before I had a brace which has now been removed. I am concerned I will have to go and get a brace back on if they are left and it pushes them back out again.

    Kind regards

    Gamma

I opted for the surgery, so I was knocked out unconscious for an hour or something. Woke up and only remembered the part of the nurse saying "count backwards from 10". I only remember saying the number 9. So no gag whatsoever obviously. Without the complete knock out anesthetic they will just freeze you as though you were getting any other tooth removed. The gagging is stimulated by touching the back of your tongue, not your gums or the tooth itself. You will be fine. But if you think you are going to gag, then you will. A big part of that gagging is the mental aspect of worrying "will I gag, oh my god I may gag, please don't make me gag"...those types of thoughts. Just try to relax and let them do their good work.

I Never had any teeth taken out while awake so have no idea of what it is like and expect my dentist to be telling me but he hasn't so...

Anyway, as I said before ... just because they have a qualification in this or that, does not mean they are really good... as I said before, they are all different so it does not really count for anything...

And what about my teeth shifting? Isn't that a reasonable concern?

I had all four of my wisdom teeth pulled in the beginning of 2009. They used dissolvable stitches and then when they dissolved there was a little hole in the gum but that is normal it will close but they give you a squirter to spray in there after you eat so no food stays in the hole. It's really not bad just annoying.

Did an oral surgeon take your wisdom teeth out as it seems they usually stitch them up but dentists never do? Just wondered. I had an oral surgeon do mine before under general anaesthetic, never awake and he stitched them up which prevented lots of bleeding. Yet, my dentist said he never stitches them up. Hmmm, perhaps it is because he is not a surgeon so does not know how to stitch?

No, never been given a squirter spray, just used salt water mouthwash. Over here in the UK we do not tend to get given things like that, unless we ask them for one and even then they sometimes do not want to due to money reasons.
