    Default Wisdom teeth removal

    Hello,

Has anyone had their wisdom teeth removed on or after 30 years of age? I am 29 and my teeth are partially out. I am hoping that the dentist will treat them as regular teeth, but to be honest I don't know if that can be done. Also, I hear that as you get older it becomes more "impacted" into your jaw, and therefore harder to pull out, is this true?

Wisdom teeth are extracted for two general reasons:

either the wisdom teeth have already become impacted "coming is sideways",

or the wisdom teeth could potentially become problematic if not extracted.

Potential problems caused by the presence of properly grown-in wisdom teeth include infections caused by food particles easily trapped in the jaw area behind the wisdom teeth where regular brushing and flossing is difficult and ineffective. Such infections may be frequent, and cause considerable pain and medical danger.

Other reasons wisdom teeth are removed include misalignment which rubs up against the tongue or cheek causing pain, potential crowding or malocclusion of the remaining teeth (a result of there being not enough room on the jaw or in the mouth), as well as orthodontics.

Wisdom teeth commonly affect other teeth as they develop, becoming impacted or "coming in sideways." They are often extracted when this occurs. About 35% of the population do not develop wisdom teeth at all.

Impacted = "coming in sideways" and has little to do with your age.

I had my wisdom teeth out last year, at age 27. I was a "late bloomer", and they didn't start coming in until I was about 24, just the bottom two as my top ones were not there. It's true that as you get older the wisdom teeth become more difficult to extract. But I finally had to have mine out because there wasn't enough room back there for them to ever come in fully, and they were causing a lot of discomfort. I was under IV sedation, didn't remember or feel a thing and recovered fairly quickly with no problems. If your wisdom teeth are causing discomfort, believe me it's worth it to just get them out and get it over with.

My husband had his come in at about 17 years old.... he just had them removed at 29 years old. Just a shot of something(novocaine doesn't work for him so they injected him with some other pain med that worked pretty well). One tooth was a bit hard for the dentist to pull but the others came out pretty easy with minimal pressure feeling. They had made his teeth so tight he pretty much couldn't floss in the back. Even the dental hygienists had a really hard time using floss on him.

When I was about 22, I went to a Seattle dentists office, and both dentists there told me I needed to get my wisdom teeth out. At that point, they weren't bothering me, and I was pregnant, so I filed it away for another time. I later moved to Dallas and met my husband, who is a dentist. I asked him about it because one of my wisdom teeth actually broke through. He said that as long as they weren't bothering me at the moment, I could hold off. He said it could become a problem eventually, because, like an earlier post stated, wisdom teeth tend to catch food and cavities can form. Several years later, I have continued to hold out because I dread getting them removed. The don't bother me at all, and I make sure I floss and brush well my little tiny wisdom tooth. Maybe check around at several dentist offices and get a their opinions. Unfortunately, I think it is not uncommon for some dentists to recommend procedures that may not really be necessary for the sake of making money Don't get me wrong, you may really need to get your wisdom teeth removed, but I for one wouldn't take the word of only one dentist unless it is someone who you have an established patient relationship with and trust them. Good luck!

I was 32 when mine finally broke through. I have had one removed at it seemed to come out easier than any other tooth. The other 3 will have to be cut out.
