Zoom
I had the Zoom 9-20-07. By the next day the inside of my mouth was red and blistered, and very tender. My chin and jawline are swollen, esp. by a tooth that had a root canal. Had to wait till Monday (today) to call the dentist, who said I have a "totally unrelated" abcessed tooth. Seems suspicious to me that within several hours of the procedure, this tooth becomes abcessed. Could the UV light or the bleaching material aggravate the area?
The dentist prescribed antibiotics, so we'll see. I had asked about pain and sensitivity prior to having it done and was told it was completely pain-free-in fact the dental assistant said it was relaxing. If I have to have another root canal because of this, it will REALLY be costly.

Chemical burns
Well it's nearly 1.30am and i'm awake worrying about my poor horribly burnt gums and if they will ever heal.
Had the zoom treatment on Tuesday, 3 days later, i cant brush my teeth as my gums sting and bleed and they look awful, white, sticky and infected. I haven't called the dentist back as i fear he will brush me off with some excuse. I should have trusted my gut instinct and gone eleswhere or on retrospect 'no where'. Dentist didn't tell me about shooting pains, chemical burns and risk to worsen gum disease. He was just interested in the money. The pain throughout the procedure was unbelievable, i thought child birth was bad enough!
Please think twice about this procedure.

I don't know if anyone that has posted here has been coming back to read what others have written... but can't you all get together and write up some type of petition and sign it and send it to the company threatening legal action if they do not refund all your monies? I know you're all in different states but I think its an acceptable method to get their attention.
THIS IS RIDICULOUS! You're all getting horrible burns! The peroxide solution is burning your gums and the UV rays are burning your lips and faces. Good grief, I have never seen anything like this thread in my life!
And my husband wanted this for Xmas. No way.....

Hi
My husband recently had the Zoom Whitening and his lower lip is soooo swollen and blistered. The only thing they said is put on it is vaseline and vit e. It's been a week and it hasn't let up at all. I wouldn't rec. this proceedure to anyone. He's a diabetic and I'm worried about him.

I had Zoom Today
I wish I had read all of these posts prior to my zoom procedure. I just got home and I am quite terrified now. The reason why I was searching after the fact is because I wanted to know what I can take for these "zingers." Just like someong menioned before I wanted to drive my car off the road on the way home because they are quite painful. So from what I have read just floride rise, IB Profin, and Vitamin E?? What about like Ora-gel??
As far as my gums, I havent noticed any burning yet but like I said I just had the procedure a couple of hours ago. It definetly whitened my teeth and I am anxiously waiting to see what happens in the next 48hrs. I am praying that I do not have a bad experience like the rest have stated. I will keep everyone posted.

Ok Here is the run down...
The actual procedure lasted a total of about 1 and a half hour. I paid just under 600.00. After hearing the previous stories it might be better to pay at least 500.00 and go to a dentist you trust.
I didn't take anything before my procedure started but on my way home is when I first experienced the "zingers." I found these to be extremely painful so I would recommend taking something before you start to experience them. I rushed to CVS and picked up some IB profin and some fluoride rinse. After taking the IB profin the zingers lasted for a total of about an hour. (not nearly as bad as others have complained) After that they never returned and I could pretty much eat as normal.
Now others also mentioned gum burns. My dentist was extremely careful to cover my gums (this part took the longest). Inside my lip I guess a little solution got on it and it felt like a small cut for a couple days.
My teeth are hands down whiter but I was informed by my dentist and a friend that it is extremely important to keep up with your teeth. Meaning be cautions about coffee, tea, etc. ( Brush right away, floss, and use the whiteing stuff they give you at the dentist) My experience was not that bad and I would do it again. Morale of the story do your research and I would be hesitant of paying any less than 500.00 for this procedure.

Can Relate
I had Zoom done yesterday. I only had 1 "zinger" and that was after the treatment while I was paying. It was quite painful and completely surprising
. I also have what feels like a burn on my lower gum and on my right side of my tongue. My dental office staff assured me that it's not a burn but more of a sore from the mouth piece. I disagree, it feels burnt and my tongue hurts when I eat. All and all, I don't have much pain or sensitivity but I'm not impressed with the color of my teeth. Although they look lighter, it's not what I expected or was hoping for. I've been wanting to get my teeth whitened for years so I'm a little disappointed that they are not the shade I envisioned. By the way, I see alot of people saying they paid $500.00 or more for Zoom. I guess I got a bargain at $199.00 plus $50.00 for the take home trays.

Zoom from a dental professional
I work in a dental office that performs Zoom whitening. First and foremost I warn patients of all the possible side affects. Yes, the bleach can seep through the barrier and cause burning of the tissues. I also warn patients that they may feel a "thumping" in their teeth, possibly for a few days. I often test our products on myself so that I can better explain to our patients the possible side affects. I also often perform the procedures on our office staff and my daughter. We have had only one patient complain about swollen lips. All bleaching materials and procedures cause some blanching, burning, sores, reddness and discomfort of the gum tissue. As with any cosmetic procedure there are always side affects and you should be completely informed by Dr. or the office staff.
Zoom recommends 4 cycles of 15minutes under the light. In my opinion I feel that this is sometimes to long and often use the light for 2 cycles.
I always offer to have the patient return in 2 weeks to perform the last 2 cycles. I also start out with the lowest consentration of bleach and I do not place the light right up to the mouth. I often leave some space between the mouth and the light. I do not recommend doing any at home tray bleaching. I have had some wonderful results and very satisfied patients. I will not perform bleaching on a patient that I do not feel that I can get their teeth at least 5 to 6 shades lighter. I have always been honest with patients during their consult and have turned patients away. At our office we are only interested in great results and not money. If we can't get you great results we tell them, "unfortunately laser bleaching will not get you the results you are looking for and we won't have you waste your time or money." Often the color of our teeth is internal not external. Internal coloring can not be bleached!!!!
To all of you who are considering Zoom keep a few things in mind. One, make sure your discoloration is external. (internal coloring will usually be more of a gray shade or a deep yellow coloring....this usually is due to medication or age) Two, make sure that when having the bleaching that the person has placed a gauze covering over your lips before they place the lip retractors. Three, ask what their office policy is if your results are not at least 5 to 6 shades lighter. In our office we have never had anyone have to ask for their money back due to the fact that we are always honest about how many shades we "think" we may be able to get them. Four, no matter how thick the barrier is on your gums there is always the chance that the material will seep through and cause discomfort. Though in my experiece I haven't had anyone had discomfort for more than a day or two and I've never had anyone had their gums turn black. Ask your dentist to do what I do......cover all exposed tissue.
As far as after you've had any bleaching.....I recommed several different things. I explain to the patient that after the bleaching session that their teeth will be more susceptible to stains for about a week so please be more careful about what your eat or drink. Keeping your teeth white........a good whitening tooth paste.....avoid drinking coffee, tea, colas without a straw. These drinks have a natural dye and will stain more easily than any foods. If you don't want to use a straw always have a glass a water with your drink.
Whitening can be a safe procedure but will cause some discomfort. Ask to be informed of all possible side effects!
