making real changes for weight loss!
hello everyone,
just joined the forum as i am really interested in health, and fitness and looking to join an online community with which to share, etc etc,
i have always had problems with my weight. i've never been too overweight, but i've never been really thin and fit either. for years i have tried uneducated ways to lose weight (i say uneducated because i had no idea about anything about weight loss and diet and fitness...I didn't undestand caloric values of food and metabolism, etc.) anyway, a few years ago i finally decided to make some real changes. i was tired of my weight flactuating so much and always ending up heavier each year after trying different weight loss ideas. i stopped binge-eating (a big problem for me) and making small changes like eating a little less and exercising a little more...it worked at first! I was losing weight really slowly, but it was permament. I lost nearly 30 pounds, it was great!
recently though, i think old habits are making their way back in my life. i have a really bad problem of emotional eating. i eat when im depressed or anxious or bored or even to procrastinate on things i dont want to face. it's a real problem. ive been doing that a lot lately due to my life changing in big ways.
i want to get back to eating healthily and exercising but i'm so unmotivated. i'm moving soon (one of the big life changes) and i feel like, what's the point since i'm moving soon and i'll start a weight loss regime them.
i move in a few weeks. im so stressed so i eat but then i get depressed because i'm gaining weight and then i eat some more to deal with the depression. it's a really bad cycle!
any tips for what i can do in the meantime, before i move and face all these changes? the reason i dont want to start actually trying to lose weight now is that i dont like trying to lose weight within a time frame. it's one of the most dangerous things a person can do with their diet (must lose this much weight but this date) because i think it causes desperation and sets yourself up for failure.
but i dont want to keep eating this way and feeling this way. i feel like i'm really abusing my body with the junk im eating.
what can i do in the meantime? how can i not destroy my health and body during this difficult time?
thank you so much

Hey there! I'm new too
I totally relate with emotional/bored eating. I think that one of the small changes you can start to make is not necessarily eating less at first, but eating differently. Instead of snacking on maybe chips or you know something unhealthy when you're eating, grab a piece of fruit!
Actually one of my favorite all time snacks is Fage 0% Greek Yogurt. Honestly, it's really good for you and you can do so many things with it. (Just don't eat it plain...lol....it tastes kind of like sour cream...) One of my favorite things to do is sweeten it with Splenda, a little bit of honey and some cinnamon. I feel like I'm being sooo bad when I eat it, but it's really good for you!
I think another good idea is just having healthy snacks, like fruits or veggies, cut up already. That way I can't really say "I'm too lazy to peel it..." (lol...I'm awful)...I just go into the fridge and it's sitting there!
I think replacing the unhealthy with the healthy (even if it's slow and gradual replacements) is going to make you start to feel better about yourself which is one of the best positive reinforcements when trying to change your lifestyle and lose weight. You'll feel better and want to keep seeing the benefits. Also, one of the favorite tricks is to drink a large glass of cold water about 15-20 minutes before I eat my meal. It makes me eat less.
Good luck to you! Hope this helped!!

hi! thanks that was great advice! small changes are really what lead to permanent weight loss. i think i will start with that. i'm not going to focus so much on how much i'm eating but rather the quality of the food i'm eating. then, esp. when i move, i can work towards eating less/getting exercise.

I think that's such an awesome initiative to take. In my opinion, our culture is so caught up in the "weight loss" deal that quality of food kind of gets overlooked. In the long run though...it totally pays off. Not only will you lose weight, but you will get all the amazing health benefits of eating really great foods. (There are tonsss as I'm sure you know!)
Also, you're always able to look for alternatives to foods you like. Have you heard of Eat This Not That? Look it up if you haven't. I'm not allowed to post any links here but I think they do an awesome job. Some of the stuff they reveal about our favorite foods is also pretty horrifying...
Good luck to you!
