Default Over 70 and overweight

Hi all... first posting on this site or on any site for that matter. Trying to help my mom with weightloss. She is 73, and oh maybe 30 pounds overweight. She is still working .. not quite full time, but almost ... and job does not allow for lots of break time. She does not like to shop (for groceries) often, and is probably not the healthiest eater. And she doesn't eat regularly. She walks her dogs very regularly, so she does get exercise.
Most of the 30 pounds extra weight is all around her middle. There is diabetes on her side of the family, although she has not idicated any symptoms yet. However she has been having some minor leg issues... pain, varicose veins, etc.
I want to help, but not sure what I can do for her.. any suggestions?

Well we know that we need less calories in than out for fat loss to occur. At her age, I doubt telling her to start counting calories and weighing food is going to fly over well.

Rather, I'd help her start making better food choices. What we typically deem healthy foods tend to be much less calorically-dense than alternatives. Therefore, simply "cleaning up" the diet by replacing junk foods with healthy choices tends to self-regulate calories for many people.

That said, you can't help someone who doesn't want to help themselves. If she's happy and content, I doubt she's going to take enough action consistently to make change.

Who knows.
