Angry Why am I not Losing Weight?

Become a member to remove this ad.
I am 33 years old and 5ft4 and weight 13.1 and am a size 14/16. I recently lost 6 stone but put 1.5 back on.

I desperately want to lose this weight and am currently running/walking at least 4 miles a day on my treadmill burning around 500 calories and eating extremely sensibly, an example of my daily food is:

    Porridge and a banana
    3 x go ahead biscuits
ham salad sandwich made with wholemeal bread and a bit of mayo
home made chicken currychilli with low fat sauce loads of veg and about a cup full of rice
    Muller light yoghurt
Coffe and water throughout the day

I dont seem to be losing any weight and I really dont understand why. I lost 2 pounds the first and second week but for the past 2 weeks I have not lost anything.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Am I eating enough/too much? Am I exercising too much?

Any suggestions would be really helpful thanks.

I'd suggest writing down everything you are eating, the portion , the extra's.. even the little bit of mayo... then go to a calorie counting site and figure out exactly how many calories you are eating. 1/2 cup of rice is the portion, I believe... 1 cup is probably giving you twice as many calories, etc... a tablespoon of mayo is just pure fat and a couple hundred calories.... sauces and things like that -- they all add up. Your exercise sounds perfect, but I would try to figure out exactly how much calories you are putting into your body.

Be sure that you are drinking plenty of water, giving your body enough nutrients... but careful on the portions not to be overdoing it. I am not saying you are over doing it... but try to figure out how much you are actually taking in. Like a bowl of pourige, read the box... see what the serving size is... are you giving yourself more than the actual serving size? etc...

Thanks for getting back to me.

I was beginning to wonder whether I wasnt eating enough calories and my body had gone into starvation mode. I will definitely start paying more attention to how many calories I am having. I might try a week of eating WW ready meals for my tea instead of the homemade stuff and see if that makes a difference.

Am I doing the right thing by running for 20 minutes at quite a highish level, then walking running at intervals of 2.5 minutes. This burns off 500 calories if I do it for 50 minutes.

I think I may be toning up but dont know if that is just wishful thinking!!

Definitely keep a food diary and keep track of your calories. HD is right about mayo, sauces, etc, those calories really add up.

I think your exercise is RIGHT on track to promote healthy weightloss. Don't starve your body, you're right, you can't lose weigh sustainably that way. But you'd have no idea how many calories are packed into the smallest of things you realize you can do without..etc.

Liquid calories are the biggest culprit, sodas, juices, sugary drinks... you don't feel full from them yet they add to your intake.

Then next big culprit are condiments, syrup... some syrup is like 250 cals in a 1/2 cup. And if you are trying to stay under like 1600/1800 a day or something like that... 250 on a bit of syrup is hardly worth it. Sauces, especially heavy creme sauces , coconut milk sauces, gravies, mayo's all that stuff is so calorie packed and again you don't even really notice your taking them in.

Then next is portions. I use to fix a bowl of cereal and felt it was right.... then one day I looked at the box and saw the serving was 3/4 cup. So I measured and put in the bowl and saw that on a typical day I was consuming 2,3, even 4 times that amount... whatever fit right in the bowl :P

Veggies (except for potatoes, corn and avacados) you can pretty much consume as your heart desires, they are good for you and their calorie effect is minimal

Fruits ( a way healthier option than cookies) but you really have to have it in more moderation than you do vegetables. An apple is like 80 calories, its good calories, but you still have to factor it in to your total. Be sure to eat fruits every day, but not all day :P

Pastas, rice, those generally have about 200 cals per half a cup serving size. A pasta bowl can fit 3 or 4 times that amount , so what looks like a serving is actually giivng you possibly 800 calories. Be sure to read labels and measure.

It sounds like a pain, but with you putting in all that work on the exercise, go the extra mile to make sure your diet isn't ruining your hard work on the treadmill

I agree with HD and sp... Journal, Journal, Journal, EVERYTHING. Find a calorie tracking website, I use and love Livestrong, but there are many many out there.

Be honest with your portions and everything you eat, you are the only one that will see it, but at least you can account for everything.

Stock up on fruits and veggies. A constant staple in my house is carrots, celery, clementines, bananas and cottage cheese.

Keep at it, it will come off eventually.
