    Default Diet Plan Comparison

I'm considering a diet plan such as Nutrisystem or Jenny Craig. I would like something that would work for both men and women since both my wife and I would be using it. I would be interested in hearing of any experiences, pros, cons that others have regarding these two programs or others. I'm really looking for something easy to prepare to reduce kitchen time. Thanks.

I think the best way is to reduce your calories and eat a balanced diet. The problem with those marketed diets is adjusting after you're 'off the diet'. (not to mention, hella expensive)
Pick up a copy of 'The Flat Belly Diet' cookbook. It's basically a Mediterranean food pyramid. It's low calories, but balanced proteins, fats and carbs. There are loads of online calculators that will tell you how many calories you should be eating (or not eating).

If you want a structured diet plan, why not try Weight Watchers? I believe you can do it from home now and not actually go into meetings.

My problem with NutriSystem or Jenny Craig is that you are eating their food, right? So, when you get down to where you want to be, you have to learn all over again how to eat and adjust to real food, not their food. Not too mention, like sp said, they are crazy expensive.

With Weight Watchers, you are learning how to eat and cook right with food that you buy at the store and readily available for you.

I agree. I highly recommend learning how to eat healthier. You want to find something that will teach you the ends and outs of adjusting to a healthier lifestyle. By eating healthier and incorporating forms of physical activity (does not have to be to the gym!) you will find yourself losing the weight! Plus, by going through this process you will learn how to live your healthy lifestyle and find that becomes habit allowing you to keep the weight off! I think that should be your primary goal! Have you guys also thought about using a health coach to help you determine what the best course of action for you is?

    Default Mediterranean diet

I totally agree with AmberKeinath. A lifelong change toward more healthy eating habits is the best way to keep your weight off. Simply dieting is not enough because as soon as you quit your plan you'll gain back all the weight you worked so hard to lose. What you need is learning how to eat healthy and, then, making healthy eating a daily choice, both for your wellness and your shape. I haven't tried the diets you mentioned, but I managed to lose some extra pounds by following a mediterranean-style eating. It's not just a diet, it's more a lifestyle, a complete set of dietary habits based on grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes and fish, providing your body with a balanced intake of proteins, fibers and fats and combining health with flavor, so sticking to it is quite easy and pleasant. The recipes are good and quick to prepare, as well. There's a good personalized mediterranean diet you and your wife could try out, just to learn the basic principles of a mediterranean-style eating and find out how many calories you should be eating. The name is Italiandiet, you can find it on the web. I tried it out as well and, apart from the weight I lose, this eating style made me feel so fit that I'm still sticking to its dietary principles. I guess this is the right approach to weight-loss, the healthiest way to keep my weight under control and get longlasting results.

    Hi maverick,

Losing weight will be a lot easier since you and your wife will both be going through the process of being healthy.

I think that you can start by eating right and light. You can have a higher amount of fruits and vegetables into your meal plan and avoid eating really fatty foods.

You can also start a fun run for the two of you or if you think this will be too much, you can choose walking as a start.

You can also join a social weight loss challenge for fun and to meet other weight loss enthusiasts over the globe and even join challenges.

I hope you and your wife will keep your track into losing weight and being healthy.

    Maverick,

I can speak from personal experience because I have done both Nutrisystem AND Jenny Craig. You WILL spend a small fortune on either of those two programs as well as grow sick and tired of eating the same foods over and over and over (it is all highly processed food). I have also done Weight Watchers and it is THE most practical and sensible program available. WW will teach you how to eat as you are losing and you can literally fit ANYTHING into WW (not so on the other programs). After just two weeks on Nutrisystem I could barely stand to look at the food anymore. I did one month and that was IT...yuck! WW is also very affordable and you eat all your own foods that YOU choose.

I wish you and your wife the very best in your pursuit of better health and a healthy weight loss and maintenance program.

Thanks for all of the replies. We settled on Jenny Craig, primarily because one of my co-workers has had great success with it and spoke so highly of it. Many of the points above are correct, it is expensive, but it does have the advantage of a weight loss coach. The menu selections are pretty varied. Maybe I will get sick of it, but after a week and a half, I'm still OK with the food. They do have a "maintenance" program for when you reach your goal weight to wean you off of the program and on to your own chow. How that goes is yet to be seen.
