    Default Diet coke junkie.

I'm going to make this brief. I drink diet coke like water, and I don't drink much water at all. I know it's unhealthy, but I want to know the extent of it all.

Health risks aside, what does it do to weight loss?

Water is supposed to power your metabolism, so could diet coke explain why the fifteen pounds I want to lose are staying so stubbornly?

And how the heck do I stop? I tried to quit cold turkey, but my mother drinks it, so it's always around the house and she brings a fountain soda home for me every morning and every evening from McDonalds. You know, the people behind the window there know her by name? Yeah. That bad. I don't want to tell her to stop just so I can lose weight, but seriously, I don't know how to resist!

I've considered a few times just making a switch to something like Arizona iced tea, but would that help? It's still not water... I'm so frustrated. I'd really like to see myself slim down now that I've changed my eating habits. My self control is notoriously terrible and if I continue not seeing results, I don't know how I'll resist the pasta anymore...

Yeah, my fix is coffee and diet mountain dew.One of the worst things is that both caffene and phosphoric acid (in most colas) are thought to flush calcium out of our bodies. That's the last thing any woman needs, and at age 35 I'm a definate candidate for low bone density problems. Also, there is some thought that our body recognises the sugar substitute as sugar and there is an insulin response / spike from drinking it. Sorry, can't remember the refrences, so take this as an opinion and with a 'grain of salt'. I don't know how or if it would affect weight loss.

Anyway, that said, I still down a couple of diet m.d.'s and several cups of coffee each day. Guess we all have dumb habitss, huh?

I've read that the artificial sugar in diet drinks makes your body produce the enzymes to break down sugar, then the sugar doesn't come and we overeat to compensate.
Try milking one or two sodas a day by watering them down and slowly ween yourself off of them. Arizona iced tea isn't good for you at all, it's full of sugar. If you're going to switch, brew your own sun tea and add a lemon wedge and maybe a dash of sugar (not too much though). Definitely ask your mom not to bring you a soda when she goes to get one for herself.
Ask her to support you, she doesn't have to do it with you, but ask her to help you by not having it around you.

I am in the same boat you are in but my vice is Diet Coke with Lime.... it HAS to be the lime kind. I drink it from the time I wake till the time I sleep. I am CONSTANTLY thirsty and I have tried drinking water but it doesn't seem to quench my thirst. On the plus side, you are drinking diet which doesn't have the calories or sugar that regular soda has (I lost 20lbs just by switching from regular to diet soda)

I personally think there is something in Diet Coke (or more specific the artificial sweetners) that cause you to crave or drink more of it??? I know constant thirst is a sign of diabetes and I have had mine checked and my sugar runs on the low side even after consuming sugar.

I have heard that crystal light is good for you or maybe sports drinks (gatorade, powerade etc...). The only other drink I like is crystal light or iced tea with sweet n low and lemon. If you find a way to break your addiction to diet coke please fill me in. I feel like it'll take a 12 step program and years of therapy, meetings and a sponser for me to stop drinking diet coke with lime.

Absolutely nothing. Having the word "diet" is only a marketing tactic to try and make the drink seem less harsh on the body than it really is. Yes the caloric intake will be less with a diet soda however there is still going to be a massive amount of artificial sugar in the drink which nullifies the notion that it is better for you. Unfortunately that sugar tastes so darn good which is why it is hard to stop lol.-I have a problem with drinking too much Diet Pepsi.

When you drink these Cola products the reason you cannot stop is the sugar as well as the caffeine. And when they say "caffeine free" they are only skirting around the truth. Caffeine may not be present but they will cram a different type of stimulant into the drink so that you still get that addictive buzz. Health wise though the worst thing about these carbonated Cola products is the high fructose corn syrup. Almost no nutritional value but packs an astounding calorie count. Companies could care less because high fructose corn syrup is dirt cheap and obviously an awesome addition to their manufacturing plants. Watch out for that ingredient over anything else, and it is in literally everything.

If you are wanting to lose weight then you need to watch the calories, meaning watch out for those sugars. Replacing Cola with water and crystal light is a really good way to go. The drink is still sweet however they use zero calorie sweeteners like Splenda or Stevia (this is a natural product if you are interested in that type of route).

Switching to Arizona tea would actually be a lot worse. I read somewhere that Arizona ice tea is the worst tea you could drink. It's full of sugar. I'm a huge diet soda fan myself. I would suggest trying Crystal Light if you can't drink water straight. Or, Kool-Aid also makes sugar-free packets that are low-calorie and like Crystal Light, and cheaper. You don't have to completely give up diet soda, just try to cut your intake. Slowly ween yourself down to a reasonable amount.

Have you tried gradually decreasing your diet cokes each day? Maybe replacing 1 or 2 with Crystal Light or water? I used to get bad headaches from lack of caffeine, but I was able to gradually change what I drank each day and limit my caffeine dependency.

Exclamation Cut carbonated drinks if you want to lose weight

    My suggestions are:

    - Drink lots of water
    - Eat more and more often (every 3 hours)
    - Eat the same amount of carbs, fat and protein (good ones)
    - Exercise 2% of your time and work bigger muscles
    - Avoid sugar completely, you can replace it if you like sweets
    - Do power walking within your exercise routine
    - Calculate your RMR *Removed outbound link*
    - Don't ever cut calories more than 20% of your RMR
    - Watch your body fat percentage instead of your weight

Wow, thanks so much for all the responses! Although they make me feel like this would be so much easier if I could shop for myself D:.

I think I'll try Crystal Light for now. I'd love to follow all of brandonzfitz's ideas, but we have very little food at our house—it'd be nice to eat every three hours, but I can barely find lunch foods, let alone healthy snack foods. We need to go shopping soon though, so I'll make a point to go along...

Really, all of your ideas are great, and I'll check back with my progress soon :].
