My antidepressants make me ravenous and eat like a pig. First Celexa, then Lexapro, now Effexor. Anyone else experience this? Any good way of dealing with it?

I have experienced it. I am trying to figure out the same thing (I am on Celexa).

Unfortunately ladies, most antidepressants cause an increase in appetite especially those that fall into the class known as SSRI's (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors).

I did three things when I was on them (I still take one but after trying most of them on the market, I finally found one that isn't too bad):

    1. Eat celery. Yeah, I know it sucks and sounds awful but it keeps the weight away while your depression is being treated. I ate TONS of it!
    2. Drink more more more water. Upto 16 ounces an hour. The body can only process 16 ounces in an hour so any more than that is silly.
    3. Consume more fruits and other vegetables. I ate a ton of apples and bananas, along with raw spinach, baby carrots and Brocolli.

Of course you can always consult with your PCP and ask them for an alternative. Two problems, if you're feeling results from the one your on now, your doc may be reluctant to change you, and most other A.D.'s have sexual side effects as well.

I have had a lot of experience with A.D.'s, there isn't one you can name, with the exception of Celexa that I haven't been on. So anything I can do to help....just ask.

At 2 cups an hour all day that can add up quickly to excessive metabolite, mineral and vitamin excretion. Have to watch that carefully.

I am actually starting a "diet" today. Just watching how much I consume and keeping my calorie count lower. I also plan to cut down on any alcoholic beverages I drink (like maybe switching to a really light beer like Select 55 or Miller 64).

Lizzard, I am sure you know this, but you should be careful to watch your alcohol consumption while taking anti-depressants.

I have been on Antidepressants for 10 years so I know how my body is while on both
