I realize that targeted weight loss isn't really possible. But I'm left wondering how then to lose fat in certain areas while keeping an overall healthy weight. I'm small and thin overall. I work out regularly (I do plenty of lunges and stairs, so understand the value of toning exercises) and eat reasonably healthy. However, I do have some fat on my butt and thighs I'd really love to lose. But dieting and extra exercise leaves me extremely thin in my upper body--in a way that looks unhealthy--and my weight dips to below the ideal range given my height.
So is there anything anyone can suggest to get rid of that final layer of fat?
As you said 'targeted weight loss isn't really possible' - it's completely impossible.
All you can do is diet and exercise and hope the weight will come off where you want it to, but some peoples bodies just like to hold onto weight in certain places. It's just your genes, and is nothing to be ashamed off, it makes you you.
As you said, toning exercises work as you can target areas to tone, so if the extra weight in these areas really is bothering you, just continue focusing on toning up.
