I'm a little embarrassed to have to write this, actually.

I'm 20 years old, and I've been really, really irresponsible in life. I don't think I'm over 300 pounds but I'm definitely over 200. The exact number, I don't know; I've been too embarrassed to look.

For a long time now I've known I need to lose weight for reasons both health-related and social, but I've never been able to keep motivated. Now I have a reason to be motivated.

It's my dream to be a translator, specifically, between English and Japanese. I've always found that language to be beautiful. So, naturally, I have chosen to pursue this interest in college. It has come to the point where at some point next year, I'm going to travel abroad in an exchange student thing to somewhere in Japan.

But I'm at least a little realistic. I really, really do not want to stand out there; I'm not small either heightwise or weightwise. I can at least do something about the latter if not the former. But I need help. I don't know what to do. I know very little about nutritional stuff and going to a gym isn't an option; I even live in a druggish neighborhood so I can't really go around there.

I want to lose weight as quickly as possible so I can stand out at least a little bit less but I also don't want to really screw up my body in the process.

Can someone please give me some advice?

I don't think you are committed and ready to do all that it is going to take for you to change and extend your life.

You open your thread by saying that being a japanese translator is your dream and that you are pursuing it in college. Now you have an opportunity to travel abroad as an exchange student. Wow!

Then you go on to say/make up excuses; I know little about nutrition, going to a gym is not an option, live in a druggish neighborhood...

I don't care who you are, where you came from or where you live. IF you are truly motivated, you can make almost anything happen including significant weight loss. Ever heard of the tv show Biggest Loser?

All of the good advice you will receive from people in here, the productive, scientific based reading that you can do on the internet about health, nutrition and fitness and even a consultation with your physician, aren't going to help you until you are willing to help yourself. That is the first and most difficult step.

I suggest you do a search of this site for all of the previous threads and replies that have been written about wieght loss, diet, health and nutrition.

Weight loss, health and nutrition are frequent subjects in this forum and have been talked about extensively.

    Good luck.

First off, you need to know exactly how much you weigh right now. You need to think about everything you consume. You need to be conscious of just how much you're being active in a day. Being honest with yourself is crucial.

Are you willing to make some dramatic changes to your lifestyle? Are you willing to change the way you eat (what, when, how much) and put in some serious time exercising? You say you can't join a gym of go outside. Those are going to be hurdles for you. But you can be successful.

It all depends on how serious you are about doing the work involved in losing weight and being healthy. No sugarcoating here - it is HARD WORK. If it was a breeze, there would be no such thing as obesity.
