This is all new to me (I'm pre-diabetic) and need some yummy treats to eat during the day mostly while I'm at work and to fulfill my BIG sweet tooth. Cutting out sweets is torture for me and it's only day 2! I started to take Metformin and need to eat each time I take it, I'm taking it four times a day, which I will take twice while at work. Any suggestions?

Welcome to the no suger club. I've been an insulin dependant diabetic for 39 years.
For most of us; once our blood suger is regulated we become aware of the "sick tired' feeling those "sweets" give us and they stop being so attractive. At first though - it's tough. The "market" is full of cookboks with low suger recipes. For snacks think veggies- carrots, celery, lettuce, cucumbers. I carry the little crackers with peanut butter or cheese fillings. Be careful of these though- many peanut butters have lots of added sugers. Artificial sweetners have their drawbacks but you trade off the low blood suger for them and it isn't a "bad trade". Diet soft drinks taste funny AT FIRST; this will pass and they will seem normal very quickly. A real satisfyer for me is chicken and beef jerky. ( It isn't chocalate- but it beats nothing!) It gets much easier after a while just hang tough and you will be amazed how much better you will feel with a "normal" blood suger.

Diabetic chocolate candy.... YUMMY!!! My Mom is diabetic and I get those for her whenever I go see her. She knows I'm a chocoholic and she shares, so I always bring extra so when I'm gone she has enough to last until I see her again.
My StepDad is diabetic too, so I bring up my diabetic deer jerky and he Loves it. He and I are more like brothers than anything else. I like older women and my Mom likes Younger Men. He's only 11 years older than I am, so it's pretty cool to have someone who has the same interests and things as I have. We hunt, fish and camp together when we can get together. It's like a big party when we get to do things, my son loves it!

Thickened no fat yogurt with fresh fruit chopped up in it. About two tablespoons of chopped up fruit for 8 oz of thickened nf yogurt.

I am not diabetic, so please refer to someone who is or who knows more than I do before adding chopped up fresh fruit to your diet.

Fresh fruit may be a no no!

Why would you have to take metformin 4 times a day when it comes in an extended release form that can be taken once a day? Ask your doctor.

My favorite low carb snacks are: unsalted nuts, natural nut butters, cheese, hard boiled eggs, plain yogurt and vegetables. When I was young my mother would fix me nut butter or cream cheese on celery stalks. I loved macadamia nut butter on celery stalk. I never liked any of the dietetic snacks or candies. The candy with sugar alcohols for sweeteners always gave me stomach problems.

I've been T1 since I was 3 and never had a weight problem, if you do beware of nut butters and cheese as they are high fat and thus high calorie.

Zen is more of an attitude than a belief.
