A little over a week ago my co-workers and I started an inter-office "Biggest Loser" challenge. I started off great, loosing six pounds in the first week! I know that is very rapid weight loss and mostly just "water weight" but I haven't lost even half a pound since then. Its been about four days since I last weighed myself at the 6 pound loss and I guess I expected to have seen a slight loss in weight. I want to know if I am doing this right or if I am jumping the gun since I am only on week two of the challenge, etc:
I signed up with dailyburn.com and they put me at a calorie range of between 2300 - 2500. I thought that was a bit high, but I am a 24 yr old active female so maybe not? However, I never seem to make it to 2000 calories a day! I eat A LOT, I just eat lean proteins, fruits, veggies, whole grains, never a high calorie diet keeping my daily intake at right around 1500 - 1800/day. Should I be consuming more calories? Since the challenge started I have also been doing more intense exercises than normal with a combo of cardio and strength building. Seems I am doing everything right...maybe not?
It's possible that you're just burning fat and with the added exercises, you're gaining muscle - which will fool the scale into thinking you aren't really making any progress. Although, it is quite early in the program and 6 pounds is quite a bit to lose so I can't say I'm surprised that now it is slowing down. Although it is hard to say, since we don't know your body composition. If you're a person who doesn't have much to lose, you won't lose much weight compared to someone who has 20 or more lbs that need to come off. In any case, it is totally feasible that in week 2 you wouldn't see much change, your body is just getting used to its new routine so it might take a while to "wake up" and realize what you're doing. Stick with it! Any amount of healthy eating and exercise is great for you, even if the scale isn't moving as quickly as you like!
It is good that you're mixing a healthy and lean diet with exercise - you're doing this the right way! It is refreshing to read that, since so many people are looking for the "quick fix." Area you journaling everything you're eating? Even the little snacky noshes you might have or drinks (not water)? You may find you're actually eating more calories than needed. And of course you want to make sure you're not eating to FEW calories either as that could work against you. The correct calorie intake depends on your current weight, goals, and activity level. Can you tell us a little bit about that?
