    Default Help!! Can't loose weight!!!!

About a year and a half ago, I was 5'4" and weighed 120 lbs. I am a ballroom dance instructor and was dancing 5 days a week for hours. Then I quit my job, dumped my boyfriend a literally laid on the couch for 6 months and gained 40 lbs. Then about 6 months ago I started teaching again and dancing about 12-15 hours a week. No weight loss. So about 3 months ago I joined a gym and started going to about 2 zumba classes a week and 1 yoga. I also stopped eating so much bad food. No weight loss. A month ago I stepped up working out to 5 days a week for an hour and taking thyroid supplements and eating even better. Still no weight loss. I am now thinking about stepping up my workouts to 2 hours a day. I have a history with eating disorders, so I make a real effort to never go to that place in my head, but I can tell it's getting if-y. I am so frustrated about still being heavy no matter what I do I feel like crying every day. All I do is think about how I can loose weight. I don't know what to do!!

what is your food intake like and what do you eat? do you journal your food and count your calories? how much water do you drink? are you a closet eater? have you been to the doctor for the thyroid supplements? and if so what did he say about your inability to lose weight? we need more information please.

You keep mentioning your weight, but what about your measurements? Have they changed at all? They should be. I tend to disregard weight as a hard and fast standard on health, and instead look at my measurements. Muscle does weight more than fat, so it's not uncommon to have a few months where your weight doesn't change, but your size does.

I have never been to the doctor about my thyroid or been diagnosed with any thyroid disorders, but I started taking the supplements in case that was an issue. I take a lot of supplements. I am not a closet eater, I eat better than most people I know. I drink only diet drinks, have started drinking more water recently, rarely any sweets, low fat, if I go to a fast food place only salads, and never any processed white carbs.

I actually have not been weighing myself at all, I only go by how my clothes feel, because I know about building muscle and it weighing more. I have lost and gained weight many times, since I did battle with eating disorders, and have never had such a hard time as now loosing weight.

If that is the case, then what is your calorie intake? If you aren't losing weight *or* size, then perhaps it is the amount you are eating that is the problem. Weight loss (at its most basic) is consuming less calories than you burn. So, even if you are working out 6 or 7 days a week, if your intake is more than your burn, you won't lose much (if anything).

also if you don't eat enought your body will hoard food in preparation for starvation. so you need to eat the proper amount of calories and the proper amounts of nutrients. i use a calorie count to help me see how healthy i am eating. it tells me how many calories i can eat and how many calories i have burnt thru exercise. you also enter the food you eat and it analyses it for you to let you know where you stand on the proper nutrients. if we don't feed our bodies properly weight loss is almost impossible to sustain for the long term. imo .. i would start recording your food on one the free sites availible and really see how healthy you are eating. i would also stop taking a medicine for a medical condition that you don't know you have. and then after a month of being diligent about recording everything you eat and all the exercise you do, if you are still not losing weight, i would go to the doctor. there are some medical reasons some people don't lose weight. but they can't be self diagnoised and must be treated by a doctor. read fitness challenge I, II, and III. there is some great advise in there.

There are few better people to answer your concerns than Cyndie. I hope you will take her advice to heart.

So you want to lose weight. You know what you're doing isn't working, regardless of what that is, so let's change the focus to what CAN you do DIFFERENTLY?

    1. Log your food. I'm currently using Calorie Count (there is an app for it too) and log my calories but ALSO my protein and fiber and other nutrients. It's incredibly easy, and oustandingly eye opening. Yes, before I started logging I said "I eat healthy. I don't eat sugar. I don't eat red meat. I eat lots of fruits and veggies". I was adament that I didn't NEED this logging. A friend said "Fine...if you don't need it, then it can't hurt anything to try it for a month then can it?". I agreed, and I was truly astonished and how wrong I was. I was not giving my body near the protein it needed, not near the fiber it needed (which I've found is one of THE most important parts of my nutrition), WAY more carbs and saturated fats than I needed. The same also holds true for people that aren't getting enough calories. If you starve yourself one of two things will happen: 1. You'll die OR 2. Youre metabolism will slow down and then you'll pack on the weight. The key is true balance: Getting your body the right amount of fuel per day, and the right KIND of fuel per day. Try it. If for nothing else, log for 30 days. What do you have to lose other than weight?

The cold hard truth is, with your history of eating disorders you have probably caused your metabolism to be sluggish. Can you fix that? Sure. But it's going to take time, diligence, balance, and the willingness to accept that you are different than you once were and are going to have to step out and try different things to find your weight loss niche.

    "Be what you're looking for."

Ok, so I found a very cool website that logs everything you eat, and all your physical activity, analyzes it, and it told me at the end of today I was Net -1,761 calories. Which means that for my age, weight, and height, that I should burned that many calories today. It even told me I didn't eat enough carbs!!!! Even if you give an error margin of a few hundred calories I should still be loosing weight, and I knew it!! I wish it would happen already!!!!!!!!!

Oh my gosh!! That's the site I found!! It is cool!!

And yes, I have jacked up my metabolism from the eating disorders, but since then, I have lost weight, had a baby, put on tons of weight!! Lost it again, started dancing, lost more, then gained again. So it's so hard to say, that's why I'm taking the thyroid supplement, in case that is the case.
