If it weren't for PMS, I probably would not be gaining weight. For the past 6 or 7 years, I have had no trouble eating a healthy diet with modest portions for 3 weeks out of the month. The 4th week, PMS rears its ugly head and I start devouring everything edible, especially if it's high in carbs and low in nutrition. I'm not physically hungry. It's a sort of desperate thing. I seem to be craving the sensation of something particular in taste and texture, but I can't figure out what it is so I keep eating and eating looking for satisfaction. I also don't seem to be able to stop after eating a reasonable portion. Instead I eat until I'm stuffed over and over again. A day or two after my period starts, I'm back in control and having no struggles with food. Unfortunately, I gain as much as 5 pounds during the PMS week but more often than not, I don't lose all of it after my period starts, so of course I'm gaining several pounds a year. Does anyone else experience this unstoppable urge to eat in the days before the period? If so, has anyone found a good way to cope with it?
My only suggestion and one I adopted before I elected to have my periods stopped...
Surround yourself with healthy alternatives. I know it seems the same ole same ole, but keep things that will satisfy urges. Want something crunchy? Carrots or cucumbers. Salty? Handful of almonds. Sweet? Fruit. Creamy? Sliced frozen bananas are AMAZING! When they melt in your mouth it is like a creamy ice cream or something. Frozen grapes are great too. Spicy? Peppered beef jerky. All else fails... Keep Dum Dums handy, lol.
More than anything... Will power. Learn to put it down and walk away. It's hard, totally mental, but sometimes you just have to tell yourself no.
Friendship Prayer
May the fleas of a thousand camels infest the crotch of the person who screws up your day and may their arms be too short to scratch.
Amen
