The only diet pill that I know of that is "safe" is alli. It works by blocking some of the fat you eat and adding to your weight loss. It won't make you lose weight on your own but it will help you lose more weight then you would without it. It's important that you follow the alli plan accordingly because it can give you treatment effects. Also if you decide to take it, make sure you take a multivitamin. (removed outbound link)
Good luck and follow the instructions exactly if you decide to take it.

the only solution to getting to a healthy weight is a healthy lifestyle- NOT DIET PILLS.

Counting calories sucks, but you must at least log your food so you know what you're eating, how much, and the nutritional value of the foods and drinks you're consuming. This is particularly important as you're just starting out, because it is VERY easy to fall back into old habits. You must stay disciplined, and logging your food or counting calories will help that.

Exercising is kind of brutal at first, but it is essential to a healthy, lean body. Why didn't running work for you? My guess is you may have over exerted yourself. But you can either try again, or maybe even try something different. Don't wait for the gym membership to get active. The world is your gym. So get out there and start with a 30-45 minute brisk walk, every day, or at the very least every other day. Get your heart rate up, start breathing heavily, ...SWEAT!

Being fit and healthy involves lifestyle change, not yo-you dieting and/or diet pills. I wont lie, those can work, but precluding long term and highl dangerous use of diet pills you'll likely just put the weight back on.

Metformin only has limited effectiveness and is pretty nasty stuff, I wouldn't advise it.

Your BF wouldn't be with you if he didn't find you attractive and may actually prefer you the way you are.

If you aren't a gym member dieting is your No.1 priority right now, healthy food all the way young lady!
