    Main Causes of Delayed Period

The first thing that comes to your mind when your period is delayed is that you are pregnant. However, if pregnancy is not the case, especially if you know there’s no way you could be pregnant, you feel utter confusion. In fact, there are several reasons for delayed periods that have nothing to do with pregnancy.
    1. Stress is often the main cause of delayed periods. When under stress, the body releases the stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline. Their elevated levels make the brain decide which bodily functions are essential and which are not until the stressful event is over. In extreme cases the reproductive system functioning may temporarily stop, resulting in delayed period.
    2. Weight can affect hypothalamus, which controls menstrual cycle. Rapid weight loss or being extremely underweight causes hypothalamic stress and the body doesn’t release estrogen enough to build the uterine lining. At the same time, being overweight or gaining much weight in a short period of time, makes the body release too much estrogen and thus prevent ovulation.
    3. Excessive exercise affects the menstrual cycle by elevating metabolism, which is responsible for sustaining menstruation cycles. At the same when overdoing exercise you put the body under physical stress, which similarly to emotional stress forces the body to protect itself causing delayed menstruation.
    4. Change in schedule such as taking on a night shift can throw off the body clock, which regulates hormones, including those responsible for menstrual cycle. Likewise, traveling across the world, which makes you experience jetlag, can have similar consequences resulting in a missed or delayed period.
    5. Thyroid disorder can cause abnormal menstrual changes. If the thyroid gland is overactive you may have lighter and less frequent periods, if it is underactive, the periods may also be less frequent but heavier.
    6. Polycystic ovary syndrome alters the levels of estrogen, testosterone and progesterone resulting in lack of ovulation. It can cause you to completely miss the periods or just not have them regularly.
    7. Medications can disrupt the menstrual cycle and cause delayed periods. This particularly refers to antidepressants, antipsychotic, corticosteroids and chemotherapy drugs. Many of them elevate prolactin levels, which can alter other hormones in the body that regulate menstrual cycle.
