    Typical Stroke Symptoms For Women

Stroke- Poor blood flow to the brain due to a bleeding or clot, resulting in cell death – also known as a medical emergency. Successful treatment is available if it is provided within 3-4 hours after the onset of symptoms. That is why recognizing the signs are crucial.
Common stroke symptoms usually occur suddenly and include:
    • Numbness of face, leg and arm. Particularly on one side of the body.
    • Confusion, difficulty speaking and understanding.
    • Blurry vision or trouble seeing in one or both eyes.
    • Dizziness, trouble walking, loss of coordination.
    • Severe headache without apparent reason.
These symptoms are common to both men and women. However, women don’t always feel the same symptoms as men. Sometimes they report additional vague or ‘silent’ symptoms, disregarding them can be dangerous. Stroke symptoms that are more typical for women are:
    1. Face and limb pain. Women may have pain in the jaw, neck arms or back. It can be gradual or sudden and can often wax and wane before becoming intense. This symptom often confuses women who may expect the pain to be in the left arm or chest, but not in the jaw or back.
    2. Chest discomfort. While chest pain is a common stroke symptom, women feel it differently. It is felt as a squeezing or fullness anywhere in the chest and not just on one side.
    3. Fatigue, general weakness and mental changes. Women may feel extremely tired even without apparent cause and become so weak that are not able to perform even simple activities, like walking to the bathroom. In ischemic stroke women are more likely than men to experience disorientation, fatigue and change in mental status.
    4. Shortness of breath, heart palpitations, lightheadedness or nausea. Trouble breathing without apparent reason, especially when accompanied with one or more other symptoms may indicate that a woman is having a stroke.
    5. Hiccups. Often thought a minor nuisance, hiccup is a common stroke symptom in women. Sudden and protracted hiccups can be triggered when stroke affects the brain’s breathing center. Hiccups and chest pain are often mistaken for indigestion or a heart disease.
    6. Agitation and sudden behavioral change. These symptoms are the most overlooked ones as they are typically mistaken for premenstrual syndrome in women.
Unique symptoms in women create a problem as they are usually not recognized as stroke symptoms and treatment is often delayed. If you think you are having a stroke, don’t waste time wondering if you should call an emergency, especially when you experience several of the abovementioned symptoms at a time.
