  • In despair over itchy skin, please help!

Hia, I'm 50 and in menopause, or had it, as last monthly was about 2 years ago, For the past 6/8 months I've suffered with itchy dry skin. It's my upper chest/throat/neck and inside elbows mostly. No rash, just intense itching. Mostly at night. I am constantly changing my hair and make up products. The Doctor has prescribed various creams, but they help to start with, then I itch again. My face is dry and flaky. I'm on anti histamines to help. I've changed washing powder. I am just fed up of being woken at night by itching! Please help?

  • I feel your frustration, more than you know.

Have they tested you for things like parasitic infestation? autoimmune disorders? Other diseases and disorders?

    Have you seen a dermatologist?

I have chronic hives, of an atypical variety. I saw 5 (i think) medical professionals before a doctor finally made the call of hives. We tried everything including steroids. I was in a state of mental instability from the intense, constant itch that was all over my body. No visible rash 90% of the time. I was incredibly miserable and even asked to be heavily sedated at one point because it is so distracting and intolerable that I thought I could hurt myself to make it stop!

I have an autoimmune disorder and was also diagnosed with Lyme at the time the hives started.

If they haven't already, get a thorough work up. Get some answers, and you may have to be pushy with your doctor team. I did.

Ultimately the only thing that helps me is zyrtec. I no longer have to take it regularly, but occasionally they flare up. It's the only antihistamine that worked.

But I urge you to get more information from your docs. It is not normal and not a benign problem.
