  • Why do they assume your size by your height?

As I have mentioned in other posts, I'm not very tall. But I have noticed when buying things like jeans, the legs are always slightly too long for the size I need. What would be long enough in the leg for me in jeans (presumably a size 8) wouldn't fit me in the waist. It seems like the people that make the clothes assume if you're tall, you'd be a bigger size but if you're small you'd be thin and need a small size. I still take a size 12 in jeans, and when I have skinny jeans, the legs sometimes look wrinkled (depending on where I got them from) because they're a bit too long. I don't wear men's jeans, but I have noticed you can get bigger waisted and shorter legs or smaller waisted and longer legs in their jeans, so why is it like that for men but not for women?

  • Well men jeans come in length and waist size. When I help my wife with pants while clothed shopping you just see like 6,8,10 and so on. I ask the wife why no length sizes and she's told me women will wear heals with the slacks most of the time they will need to be hemed up to the length of the heels. Now being I don't wear heals or women pants and she does so I will believe her on this statement lol.
When out driving always turn left. Then, should you become lost, you can find your way home by reversing the procedure and always turning right.

    • Sizing of clothing is simply done by averages. If the average woman (based upon I don't know how many samples) has a 5' 5" frame then their legs are presumed (because they've all been measured and averaged out) to be about 30 inches.

It is more than likely that you'd purchased jeans (in the US and Canada at least) by the waist band size and then you can select the leg length. For instance a size 32 waist size may have leg lengths of 29, 31, 32, 33, 34 and 36 inches etc. and also the same for other waist sizes.

Be aware that the waist size on jeans doesn't actually sit on a persons waist, they normally sit further down on the hips which is why you may take a number larger than your actual waist.

What I've done - find a brand which provides you with the best fit you can find. As MG states also, determine what shoes you plan to wear with those pants.
That which we forget may as well never really happened.

      • For years my wife complained about the way her clothes fit. I finally convinced her to go to my tailor. Now she gets all of her clothes tailored. It's made a drastic difference in her style and confidence. For your clothes to really fit you well, that's what you need.

While means jeans do come in different lengths, our dressier pants, like with suits, do not. They need to be sized.

        • You're lucky! Imagine if it was the opposite...
You can make long jeans shorter, but you can't make short jeans longer.

          • Haha, you're right! My brother is the opposite of me. He's really tall but skinny as well, and needs jeans with long legs but a small waist. I do alter the legs on my jeans though. It's just annoying that the legs are too long on the size I need. Like I said, for the leg to be the correct length, the waist would be too small.
