My grandma had surgery to remove the cancer in her breast. The doctor said her lymph nodes are fine, but her breast tissue is not. What does this mean? She has to go back to surgery in a few days. I'm really scared, and worse, my grandma is scared. I never pictured her being scared.

  • The nearby lymph nodes are mainly concentrated in the area of the armpits. Others are spread throughout the body. The lymph nodes can be a place where cancer spreads to. So the doctors are saying it has not spread to them implying that the cancer has not spread. With them saying her breast tissue is not fine and she going back for surgery probably means she may have a partial or full mastectomy on one or both breasts. It could also mean that they have to do some additional cleanup of the area and then have radiation and/or chemotherapy.

I understand her being scared. Cancer is a thing that you beat or it beats you.
I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided, and that is the lamp of experience.
    ...
Shall we gather strength by irresolution and inaction? Shall we acquire the means of effectual resistance by lying supinely on our backs and hugging the delusive phantom of hope, until our enemies shall have bound us hand and foot?

From a speech by Patrick Henry on March 23, 1775 at St. John's Church, Richmond, Virginia
