IUD and 5 months of nonstop bleeding

Hello,
I am looking for some advice or seeing if any other woman has experienced something like this before. I’ll provide a lot of info hope none of it is too tmi.
As the title goes I have an IUD and I’ve been bleeding for 5 months straight. So a little background on it. I got kyleena in June of 2018 and out of no where in June of 2022 I started spotting for a week in between my periods and in July I had sex for the first time since like March and a little bit after that I started bleeding everyday, at least 1/4 of a cup of that helps. I got in touch with my doctor and we did every test possible from blood work, ultrasound (transvaginal and abdominal), pregnancy test and STI check. Everything came back normal. She even made me take Advil 3 times a day because apparently that has helped other women before who have experienced weird bleeding like this with an IUD. At this point my doctor thinks that even though everything does look good, it may actually be touching the lining and it’s just not noticeable on the ultrasound so I will be getting it removed. I just want to know if any other woman has experienced something like this and if they know the reason why it was caused or if getting the IUD replaced helped fix it. I just want to hear that I’m not the only one who this happened to and that there is a reason or an answer as to why. Any helpful advice or storied is appreciated and I’d love to hear people’s opinions as to why this may be happening.

Hi there, and welcome to the Forum. I wish I could offer concrete information. What I can tell you is that in my own previous experience with an IUD, when it came close to its "expiration date" (when it was about to stop being effective), I experienced some breakthrough bleeding, though not as much as you've had. Replacing my IUD solved my particular symptoms.

I've also known other people who had mysterious, constant bleeding and for them, the solution was to remove their IUD completely -- and either try another type later or use a different birth control.

The one thing I'm positive of, though, is that you're definitely not alone in this. Other people have had strange, unexplained issues with their IUDs, too.

Hi I just wanted to post on here that the bleeding was due to a horrible case of BV and has stopped after treatment. If the full story helps though basically my doctor and I decided to remove the iud and go on the pill the bleeding got worse until I started a course of antibiotics and it went away. Then a couple weeks later the bleeding and the smell came back and I was tested again which came back positive. After another course of antibiotics the bleeding has stopped and I have tested negative for BV as well. Just adding this just in case it helps any other women who may be experiencing this type of bleeding and that it could be a sign of BV.

Thank you for the advice but the bleeding was due to BV that went undiagnosed. I know bleeding isn’t a symptom for it but once it was gone the bleeding stopped as well.
