  • No ‘healthy’ bacteria in vagina - awaiting STI results

    Hello,

I've just gotten back from a Sexual Health clinic and I'm looking for some advice!

I've had slightly more discharge (with a bit of a smell), but nothing too dramatic, for a few months. I thought it was my hormones readjusting after coming off the contraceptive pill almost a year ago, or that it could be BV, so went to get checked.

The nurse was lovely and has taken swabs and a blood sample. She was able to test for BV and thrush there and then - she was gone for quite a while and apparently asked for a second opinion. She said that although I don't have any of the 'bad' bacteria, I also don't have any 'good' bacteria. She said it therefore doesn't look like BV.

I'm now in limbo as I await the STI results but wondered if anyone had experienced similar? Could having no/very low 'good' bacteria signal something else, or perhaps still BV? Without going into details, I'd be very surprised if it turns out to be an STI. Are there any that present this way, with no other known symptoms?

I appreciate I need to await the test results, but I feel very anxious now and just wondered if this was common etc.

    TIA ?

  • This can be caused by douching, certain bath additives, even soap. I hope the docs have some solutions for you.

    • Hey there! Welcome!

I think Wednesday offers some good ideas.

A few years ago, I had an issue with Group B Strep and it was a miserable time, and a mystery for my providers. If what they've done yields no results and relief, ask them to look for it. The only symptom I really had was mild discharge, which turned into copious volumes of discharge. It was worse than any period I ever had and it took a few months to figure out what was happening. I had some mild itch and burning in the beginning.

GBS is part of our normal bacterial flora, but it overgrows and causes issues. Check your vaginal pH, and talk to your doctor or nurse about whether it could be causing your problems.
