    Engagement Rings?

I'm not entirely sure this is the appropriate place to ask this, but it did seem the closest match to me. (Either that or one of the gossip rooms.) Anyway, this morning my guy and I were joking about engagement, and the question of engagement rings was brought up. He's under the impression that I'm highly likely to be the one doing the engagement. Since I'm the one that asked him out, this does seem to be a possibility. I'm a rather impatient person, and he's...not.

Anyway, we were wondering, what's the social norm on the exchanging of rings when the female proposes? I currently have no intention of proposing, but it's really sparked my curiosity.

My Friend proposed to her guy and she had a ring for the occassion. Her guy also went out and picked her out a beautiful ring!

You get two simple rings... One for him and one for yourself. But you know...I think you have to do what feels right to you.

My husband and I really don't go for tradition. I also follow no religion whatsoever and he follows a non mainstream religion. So for rings we looked together and had some designed by cascadia design which does custom titanium rings. Durable, affordable, and still nice looking. Then we just opened the box together and I suppose if they were engagement rings you could have each person put it on the others hand. We actually didn't do engagement rings and instead have the matching titanium bands with a small sapphire and a strip of annodized blue as our wedding rings. If you run electricity over titanium it changes color based on how long/how much electricity is used so they can permanently color areas of the ring.

What is appropriate really depends on your own opinion. Different cultures do things differently. Out of curiosity we actually researched the purpose of engagement rings, all the social requirements that come with proposals, and the reason marriage rings are so expensive. Some of it is rather interesting and really you can justify anything you chose to do depending what line of logic or culture you decide to follow.

Do whatever you want to. There is no right or wrong.

Contrary to what the wedding industry would want you to believe, tradition is out the door these days. And it's the wedding vendors own fault as they've made everything such a hassle and so expensive that people are having to get creative.

I remember looking at vendors....Dj's/flowers/venues....the SECOND you tell them you're planning a wedding, the price of everything goes up 30%. Even the churches are in on it....$2500 for two hours at a church? Shouldn't they be ENCOURAGING marriage? It's disgraceful, really.

          You decide....have fun.
