Confessions of a Young Mother - My Fiancee May be Gay...

My fiancee, the father of my one year old, may be gay. It may sound that unusual or unheard of, but the situation that I am in is a very particular and detail-oriented one. Both he and I met in art school, and instantly we had a connection. We spent almost all our time together, and within a month of meeting each other (and only one semester in to my college career) I was pregnant. He was older, with three semesters left until he would be finished. But we were so drawn to each other and got along so well, we decided what the ******** we're going to give it a shot. For me, the prospect of being 19 and pregnant with someone I barely even knew was (and continues to be) terrifying. Not knowing what my future held was the scariest part. But when the heartbeat of my son filled the doctor's office I knew in my heart that I loved this baby more than anything I had ever loved before.
So we moved in together, dropping from school so that he could work full time at his father's business. We were comfortable, or as comfortable as we could be given the circumstances. We found a cute apartment, got a nursery all ready for the baby, and gave the whole domestic routine a go. Immediately things became complicated, which is probably to be expected. He began watching a lot of porn, he would even watch it in front of me. He always asked if it was okay or if I minded, and I would say yes because... I wanted to be confident enough to be okay with my boyfriend watching porn right across from me, his pregnant girlfriend. When we first met, our sex was frequent and exciting, and it continued for a little while. But soon he'd never be in the mood. He touched me only about once or twice a month, and during the time we did have sex he would blurt out scenarios he'd been fantasizing about, asking me if I'd be okay with a threesome, if I would mind if he'd have sex with a man in front of me, and on and on. My belly kept getting bigger, and apart from our increasingly strange sex life, we got along well in other respects, and we did have fun together.
Soon the only porn he was watching was gay porn, or "shemale" porn. I would literally be in our bedroom by myself while he sat in the living room masturbating before bed. I was confused, wondering why I'm not enough, feeling ugly and huge, and my self esteem took a major major toll at this part of my life. Of course I would ask him why he enjoyed this and yet didn't consider himself gay. He always replied "I don't know" or "it's only a fantasy" but it got so extreme that I found that hard to believe.
It escalated to the point that he was looking on craigslist (in front of me, or in the same room) for local males in the area looking for hookups. He asked me if I would mind if he slept with another person, a man, because it was something he always wanted to do. I'd never been asked a question like this before, but ultimately I decided that if it would help him figure out who he really was, then that would be the best move for him. But I told him that meanwhile, I was not going to wait around while he would be "discovering himself." In other words, I told him maybe it would be best to have some time apart. But he insisted, vehemently, that he did not want this to happen. He said he loved me, and I do believe that he does. He works every day to provide for myself and for our baby, pays bills on time, and although we both dropped out of art school we both tried to have fun with one another and do projects together.
After our son was born, an event occurred which still causes major distrust in our relationship. While my son and I were visiting my family an hour away, his newly "out of the closet" friend had visited him and they got drunk together. Apparently, he had told my fiancee he had always wanted to know what it would be like to kiss him. Who knows what happened after that? My fiancee says he told him he wasn't interested and gave him a ride home. The fact is that the only way I figured out about this incident was that he blurted it out a month later - while we were having sex. Yes, once again, another stab to the heart during my most intimate moment. He insisted that nothing happened, after he saw that I was upset, but really who would ever know? I told him I was not okay with this, especially since he'd already been keeping it from me for a month. Who knew what else he was failing to mention? And how could I be sure he wasn't failing to mention that they also had sex afterward?
I told him I didn't want him to remain in contact with his friend, but to this day he stays in contact with him either through texts or calling one another. I feel like he really doesn't care about my self esteem, or the fact that he's taking advantage of the fact that I am trying my hardest to make things work so our son will have two parents.
To this day he continues to watch gay porn, as well as the fact that he frequents those "chat roullette" sites. He's admitted to me that he finds it arousing to display himself masturbating on the internet to strangers, as well as watching them in realtime.
I'm not ashamed to admit that I "snoop" - although believe me it's not something I do often. I find it disheartening and like a stab to the heart every time I do, and so I usually stop caring.
We fight often, and he comes from a heavily catholic family so it could be he feels intense denial and fear about being honest about his sexuality. I try my hardest to understand and be okay with this unique set of circumstances, but the truth is that I consider myself to be depressed. Although we have our fun times together, I can't ignore the past or pretend it didn't happen, and continues to happen. He is currently going to therapy, mostly because of my pushing. I am also speaking to a therpist.
I love my son with all my heart, and his love is so innocent and pure and unconditional. But I'm afraid that he'll get older and see that everything is not nearly as it seems, and I don't want him to ask why I cry every night.

I guess what I'm asking is what your opinions are? The thought of being a single mother terrifies me, but I want to do the best for my son and for myself, and believe it or not I honestly want the best for my fiancee as well, whatever that may be.

    Right...

Your relationship is, as you know, is complicated to say the least. Whilst there is significant strain between the to of you it is good to see your BF remains a committed father, and you a committed mother, and he is still working to provide stability and support for you and your son.

My GF's ex (the father of her children) is bi-sexual, and was in a relationship with a man when she first met him. I've met him, and he's a really nice guy. I won't go into too much detail about him since it's not necessary, but I'm just telling you so you know I can at least partly relate (by proxy) to your situation. I've spoken to her quite a lot about it as I find the circumstances rather intriguing.

If your BF is not gay, he is at least VERY confused about his sexuality and probably bi-sexual and sounds actively bi-curious. Many gay men (sadly, due to social pressure) do not want to be gay. It automatically makes life a lot more complicated for them; this guy comes from a strict catholic family, living with a woman is the most practical and convenient smokescreen to protect him. Homosexuality is not something that can be switched on and off. My GF's partner told her he just goes through stages where he starts finding men and women more and less attractive.

My best friend (one of them) committed suicide a few years ago (hanged himself) and I think that - amongst other issues - he was gay and repressed it all of his life, his dad and brother aren't the kind of people you'd want to 'come out' to.

Your BF has some serious issues to work through, he is also behaving in a very disrespectful way towards you with regards to porn etc. I would continue the therapy and encourage him to do so as well.

You have a son to raise, I don't blame you for being worried about the future, you're in your right to want to plan ahead for you and your son. The good news is that just because your BF is potentially gay, doesn't mean he's a bad father or going to become one. My GF's ex is a great guy and a loving, committed father, if it weren't for her we could probably become friends! The sad thing is she's told me she thinks he's suffered from depression for years, I honestly believe this is because he is repressing his homosexuality. I can by looking at him (I can just 'tell') he's more gay than straight, and that's not a criticism, just an observation.

One things for sure, long term the two of you cannot carry on like this. An environment in which exists no true love between parents is not good for a child to be raised in. What is your personal support network like, family, friends, etc?

First off, thank you for responding. It is definitely important to note that my boyfriend is an incredible father, and a reliable supporter for our family. Aside from our personal relationship, everything is peachy.
My family lives an hour away, and don't visit often. It is usually me who has to go down and visit. However, I have an extremely open relationship with both of my parents, and I have told them both exactly what is going on. They were never excited about the both of us getting together in the first place, so it wasn't a surprise when they continued to push me to leave him after they knew all the facts. My fiancee's family is supportive of us staying together - that said, they don't know why we have problems, but they are constantly giving me "pep talks" and telling me that everything can be resolved with communication. This puts more stress on me because I feel like I am being fake in front of them - they genuinely want to help but I get constantly annoyed with the fact that all our conversations are meaningless.
Another reason I continue to stay with my boyfriend, is that he suffers from depression as well. By the sound of it, he suffered for a while. About a year before we met he went through a "dark time" where he did lots of drugs, drinkings, etc, and ended up in rehab. Today, he doesn't seem to go off the deep end like that anymore, but he does still have an extremely addictive personality. He has told me several times he thinks of killing himself, and I honestly believe it's because he doesn't know who he is, and isn't comfortable in his own skin.
Does that answer some of your questions? haha

I think that you are one heck of an intelligent woman. You understand what constitutes a relationship and the love of a child.

But things are not one way only and it sounds as if you have given in a lot, in order for this to work and he has taken alot.

I understand the frustration of having interfering, in-laws and also the frustratoin of having closed minded to a degree, parents although they may not be so upset over him possibly being bi, or gay, rather that he treats it all as if he owns it, not considering you really enough.

I am glad you are pushing him for therapy I am sad that you have to go through that yourself, over someone. Rest assured it's not anything you should concern yourself over regarding your body, sexuality as this honestly appears to be all about him.. Please get that thought out of your head.

I'm concerned that he seems to be able to communicate his needs, desires, wants which doesn't include you sexually that often, yet, he has been depressed and talking of suicide. I think that you are holding him together, and the baby and it's going to be a long road for him to get to the point where he doesn't think like that anymore but at what price to you?

Like you stated, you didn't know him very well when all of this happened and you now know him quite well.

You are young sweet. If you feel you want to see where the therapy with him goes, then do that. But, you will have to be one heck of a strong woman and not show your baby your tears.

If you feel it's too much then go back with your parents and tell him that you will re-view your lives once he has completed therapy, as you don't wish to cry anymore.

One thing you can't do, is put your life into a situation for someone else, in-other-words stay only because you fear he may very well commit suicide.

He was ignorant and rude to lie, to wait until you were away to act on a fantasy only to blurt it out 1 month later, and whilst in bed.

Sorry after the fact, is hard to swollow...

Do you really feel you love him ? Or love him as a friend and feel you have to be there for him. He can always be a good Dad and take care of his son..
