Lost IUD Threads??
I got my IUD fitted about 6 weeks ago. Last week, I went for my follow-up with my gyn. He informed me that my threads have been "sucked up" into my cervix. He confirmed that the IUD is still in place by "poking" around (which was uncomfortable). I am not feeling good about this, as the threads are the only way that I have to check if it's still there. And I'm worried about what I will have to go through when I need it removed. He told me to come back at my annual check-up (which is about 4 months away). I am seriously thinking about having it removed. Has anyone else experienced this? And if so, how did you deal with the situation?

I found my threads
I was getting ready to call my gyn tomorrow about getting a new IUD due to my missing threads. I decided to try checking one last time. Lo and behold, I was barely able to feel the ends of my threads. I guess it is easier to check them at the end of your pd. They were cut short, so I guess that makes a difference to. Other then heavy bleeding (which lasts about two days
)I haven't had any of the major side effects I've seen posted, so I'll be sticking with it a little while longer.

I can't find my Mirena IUD threads...
I have had a Mirena IUD for 1 week. I can't locate my threads. I have even asked my husband to help in this search. I am embarrassed, frustrated, and feel humilated. I think perhaps my threads are short, and my fingers are rather short, so perhaps I can't feel high enough. My husband's are short too. So I am ready to call the doctor, but thought I would search the internet and came across this wonderful source of people to talk with. I think I might as well just wait until I get my period and see if I can find them after my period as you stated. I think your cervix turns in and out, so maybe the threads do get caught in that opening. I am tired of going to the doctors and the expense and quite frankly not looking forward to the discomfort of searching for the threads at the doctors. I, too, am a little worried about the discomfort of removal in 5 years. Hopefully, not too uncomfortable.Comment

Hi ladyjane69.
I'm glad you found my post. I too was unable to find any info on the web about lost IUD threads and decided to post my experience for others that may be having the same problem. There are so many different ranges of experience that women can have with the IUD. I have to say that so far it really hasn't been too bad for me. I checked a few days ago and my threads are still in place, I could feel the ends and the top of my cervix. The cervix does change position depending where you are in your cycle so some days may be easier than others. If you can't find them, check again after your pd. If still having trouble, see your dr. I hope all works out well for you.

Happy you found your threads
In my situation iwasn't so lucky. I'm posting this b/c i had no where to turn or look for info, then i found this web site. if you can't feel your threads call the doctor. I trusted the doctor who inserted the iud, but i should've worried when she said the string wher to short, to make a story short i got pregnant a whole year later, to find out that the iud is behind my uterus wall. The doctor punctured my uterus wall when inserting the iud and now i lost the baby and have to go under surgery in 2 weeks. My new doctor says that i need to becareful b/c it can puncture my bowel and then we will really be in trouble. So if you don't feel them and have alot of discomfort in your lower ab, call the doctor.Comment

Lost IUD
I'm so happy I found a forum to discuss this matter. My name is Gisela (nefertitisg*hotmail.com) I lived in VA and I'm a mom of two children 13 & 5. After having my second child I was clear I want NO more children, however my husband want one more child...or at least he tough that. Anyway I have a Mirena on about 5 years ago. Last Nov I have my annual check and my OB GYN told me that the strings were short but she was able to touched the IUD. We schedule a followed up to removed it and have it replace (by the way my overall experience with the Mirena have been great, no periods for 5 years, no extra weight, some mood swings but my husband is a psychologist so that was never a mejor problem). Today I went to my doctor office to replace the Mirena, well they can not found it. The Doctor tried three alternative (very painful procedures to try to dilate my cervix and try to see it). After too much pain, she gave up and send me for a sonogram. She told me that is very possible they will need to put me to sleep and have surgery to get it out. Unfortunatly NOONE told me that when have it the 1st time. What know, well I need to wait, but I will not have it back don't matter they can sucesfully found it. I'm bledding and worry that I have NO protection so I can get pregnant I guess. The positive if I need to have surgery if that I will cut my tubes. But in the mean time I need to wait and I'm so scary.Comment

IUD removal when threads are lost
I went to a gen. practitioner to get my IUD out (want to have another kid). I had a copper one after my first kid. It was fine, but my periods were way too heavy (cuz I have heavy ones anyway). So. this one is the Mirena. I have loved it! Almost no period after years of super heavy ones. Anyway, the doc. couldn't find the threads and sent me to an ob/gyn. Just came back from there. She couldn't find them either. The procedure from here? I have an ultrasound in a couple of days to make sure the IUD threads went in and that the IUD didn't slip out. After confirming it is still there, I will have to schedule a procedure where they will drug me (pain killers and relaxants) and use a scope to go in and find it and remove it. Sounds a bit painful, but no worse than many other procedures I've gone through. I'll try to post again if I have the procedure to share how it went for me. The ob/gyn said it is pretty rare for the threads to get lost like this. I wouldn't discourage someone from getting an IUD out of fear of this happening. Unless the removal procedure is extremely terrible, I would still do it just for the relief of heavy periods and not having the mood effects of taking the pill. (I've only had mine in for 6 months and so far I'm glad I did it, even though the threads got lost.)Comment

So back in June I had the Mirena iud put in. Everything was fine, I went to my 6 week check up and my Dr. said everything was ok. (mind u after the 1st week my hubby said he couldn't feel the strings but my dr. said that it was normal...huh?) Shortly after my husband again said that he couldn't "Feel" the strings during sex. I tried to check for myself, heck I even had him try and no luck. So i called my dr. and they had me come in. And guess what? She couldn't find them either, so they scheduled a ultrsound and x-ray appointment for me & I went, a week later my dr. calls and says that my iud is missing! I am so ****ed. She had the nerve to ask if i wanted another one put back in....ummm no i'll just stick with the pill.Comment
