Okay to take BC before period?

My periods are VERY irregular... The last period I had was back in July 2010, it's weird, but sorta common for my periods. I would skip months before I would have one. I know I'm not pregnant. This is the first time that I've used birth control. They told me "we usually start our girls on the next following Sunday. But you can start your's today (was a Wednesday, Jan. 12th)." I didn't think anything of it, and started that day, because I wouldn't know when my next period would be. I now had my period this previous Weds. My mother recently told me that I shouldn't have started it till the 5th or 7th day of my period.

    Now I'm kind of paranoid.

Was it okay for me to start it the way I did? Or did I make a mistake, and what should I do?

I know my post is kind of "all over the place". I'm sorry for that.

The only reason a doctor says start your pills on the first of the month, or right after your period and so on is just to keep periods regular. They also say start on a Sunday because it is easier to keep track of the pills when you are taking them. An active pill will stop a period from coming even if naturally she was supposed to have her period. When she starts the inactive placebo pills that is when her period is going to come. It is not bad to take the active pills when you are due for your period it just prevents your period from coming which can mess up your possible natural schedule that you may have been used to.

In your case there is no schedule of a period, it comes when it wants. The pill will stop that randomness and start regulating your period. Starting the pill on Jan.12 means you will get your period around 21 days later (when you start the placebo portion of the pills), so roughly Feb. 1. Since you have never been regular with your periods that Feb. 1th "expected" period date can be different. And it made sense that you had your period this past Wednesday Feb. 2nd because technically it should have fallen right when you were taken the inactive placebo pills.
There are those who believe that dictionaries should not merely reflect the times but also protect English from the mindless assaults of the trendy.

Ooh.... That's a relief. I was scared that something would be wrong. Thanks so much for responding!
