Can the wrong pill cause permanent damage?

    Good day all

I have found this website to be very helpful with other questions i had but cant find anything on this subject so i thought i might as-well register now and become a part of this very helpful community.

Ok so here is the thing, my girlfriend has very intense menstral cramps, she also does horse riding, as she has an endurance ride coming up and she is due to have her period that weekend her mother first decided to let her get the injection, after a discussion between her mother and a friend of her mother they decided to give the pill a try.

now here is my concern, her mother is now giving her some of her pills to use without consulting a doctor. I am concerned that this might not be safe, am I being paranoid or not?

Thank you in advance for your reply and sorry for the long post

Yes it is very dangerous to just randomly give someone pills without knowing what could happen. "It works for me so it will for you" does not apply in medical cases. Each case is different and must be treated as such. There is more than one variety of birth control pills, each will work in a different way depending on the slightly different chemicals in each. She must get the prescription from a doctor, not her mom going to the doctor and getting a prescription it must be in your gfs name and the doctor must take a history. Really bad idea to just take a random pill because someone else says to.

Thank you for the reply ItsASecret.

That is exactly what i thought, I will talk to her later today and tell her about my concerns, even if i have to take her to the doctor myself and pay for the visit or whatnot.

i just want to scare a little to rethink the situation so what could happen if it is the wrong pill?

It all would depend on a past medical history and any current conditions, what other medications she may be taking. The list is long and only a doctor could tell you what could go wrong, if anything could go wrong that is. The simple fact is that taking a pill just because someone tells you to without any previous knowledge or professional opinion is not a good idea. Birth control is not made to hurt someone, they are actually extremely safe themselves but problems arise moreso if people have particular existing conditions. All of which are addressed by a doctor before they write any prescription.

Sometimes prolonged use of a product can cause problems. I developed trouble with clotting after being put on a high dosage contraceptive pill for several years. Thereafter I could not use the pill ever again. I know it might be difficult for your girlfreind to go against her mother but why not encourage her to get in and get her own prescription if that would be appropriate?

Just randomly taking the pills for a few days probably won't help much anyway.

            Thank you for the replies.

We talked a bit about it and she said she will try to rather go and see a doctor.

But after some more info from all of you ad some other sources as well i feel more at ease with the situation, I will just check out the specific pill to check how strong it is etc. before she starts taking it but feel better about the situation already.
