What does a false negative pregnancy test mean??

We just got the results of my daughter's pregnancy test, and they said it is a false negative. Can anyone explain to me what that means?? Thank you!!

A false negative sounds like a positive. Who said it was a false negative? Doctors? What procedures were done to decide?

His secretary called and wouldn't talk to me. She told my daughter directly, but I heard the words "false negative" over the phone. They had done a urine test that my daughter had yesterday.

If you're sure of what you heard, sounds like she's pregnant. The urine test may not have come up positive (it measures the pregnancy hormone over a certain quantity,) so maybe they did a blood test (which measures whether the hormone is there at all.) Low HcG is bad. Unless your daughter has found out she's pregnant quite early (like before her period was even set to come,) she should be able to set off a properly-working pregnancy test.

That's definitely the words I heard (the secretary talks pretty loud), but my daughter REFUSES to tell me anything else that was said, and the doctor's office won't tell me anything either. I would think I have a right to know since my daughter is only 17, but patient confidentiality fits in even with minors here. I honestly hope to God she's not pregnant, I wish she would just tell me or I have no other way of finding out. Teenagers!!!!!!!!!!

She should just tell you...obviously if she is you'll find out eventually when her belly starts to grow! Just try to be supportive and let her know that you'll be there for her regardless of if she is pregnant or not. Reassuring her that you're not going to blow up at her if it does come out pregnant might give her more courage to tell you what's really going on if she is pregnant. If she ISN'T pregnant, then I would sit down and have a conversation about birth control and see if she'd be willing to start the birth control pill or another option. She might just be too scared to say anything if she is pregnant. It's too bad you can't find out through the doctor, but they can't really go against policy either.

Yep, you'll have to wait for your daughter to tell you. I don't know what your relationship with your daughter looks like, but I second lizzard's suggestion to talk it out with her and give her a safe space to emote in. She needs to start taking action weeks ago to ensure a healthy pregnancy, start taking prenatal vitamins, stop any unhealthy habits, etc. She has some time to figure out what to do if she wants to bring the pregnancy to term and keep the child or adopt ... she has much less time to figure out if she wants to terminate, if that's even an option to be put on the table. Depending on the laws in your state, she might require one or both parents' consent to get that termination. It's in her best interest to give you a heads up, just like it's in your best interest to accept the information in a non-judgmental way.

This is all supposing the pregnancy is healthy - miscarriage is more common than you think, especially if she found out extremely early.

You do have a Right to Know !
But as said.. Different States and even Countries
Deem that Adults Permission to be in Sexual Activity is or is not against the Laws.

                I am assuming,
That this was before you stayed home with Evan and the others went off to the Holiday Home in the Islands .?

She can worry about being Pregnant and asking a Dr. to verify a positive or not .
                Within the 2 weeks timeline.
But do you have the closeness with her .

                Try to discuss this ..
She is or is Not Pregnant.
Is she worried about telling her Dad or You ?

Why is she worried . Is it because she is Sexually Active prior to a Legal age ( States ) of Responsibility .
Or a Parents Allowance / Religion or Responsibility of said " MINOR ".

It is time for her, even at 17, to discuss this with the ones who will Help her Decide. Just what she will do with the Positive or Negative part of her Decision to be Sexually Active.

If she is Not willing to Share,
She has no Support for the Possible Pregnancy .
Try to talk with her. See if she will get , if Preggers, Basic Care,

Try to make sure the " Father" also helps care for the Possible Child.
Scary thought to most that take Sex as a Fun game ..

This morning I had a chat with her and asked what was said on the phone. She told me "it was negative". I told her I heard "false negative". The secretary asked when her period ended and she said two days ago, so apparently the secretary told her "it's okay then." Normally my daughter and I are very close, she comes to me with things I'd never expect, except when it comes to sex. I told her it doesn't bother me if she's having sex, as long as she's taking precautions against pregnancy and diseases. I know things happen alot quicker nowadays than when I was young and I told her I understand that, and I'm not upset that she's having sex. I said "if you are indeed pregnant, I need to know so I can help you with the decision making". I'm hoping we can talk some more tonight. I am seeing this doctor myself in about 1/2 hour as I think I may have strep throat so I'll see if he says anything. I may just come out and ask him myself if he doesn't offer any information. He knows I am very close to all of my kids, and he also knows how stubborn my daughter can be. I think she's more embarassed of the fact that people have figured out she's actually having sex than anything else.

It was 2 months ago that she missed her birth control pill, so I can only assume that "if" she was pregnant, she'd be a couple of months by now.
