Bleeding for a few days following sex

I have recently been bleeding for 4-5 days after having sex. I am not on the pill and have had normal periods my entire life. What could be the cause of this? Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Was it close to your period? Did you have rough sex? Was the bleeding heavy or light? Did you have any other symptoms?

      Stressed,

Thank you for your response! It is usually about a a week or two after my period. The bleeding was light the first time and heavier after that. There are no other symptoms. It was rough but I have had rough sex before and this has never happened. I plan on going to the doctor next week but decided to see if anyone here has experienced something similar...

Does it always happen after sex since the first time it happened?

It's great you're going to the doctor soon. I don't think it's serious. Light bleeding can happen after sex, but maybe something triggers it to last longer this time.

Please let us know what the doctor determines is happening. How many times has this happened? Are you using any other form of birth control or are you TTC? What color is the blood?

            jns,

I will absolutely let you know. This has happened the past 3 times. I am not currently using any form of birth control and am not TTC - in my previous research I did find that these were two common reasons that a woman may bleed after intercourse. The first time I bled it was light pink and only appeared when I wiped so I wrote it off as slight spotting from irritation. The next couple of times were heavier, darker red, and I had to use a tampon - enough for me to feel something is a little off. I am worried it is an infection of some kind, but it is probably best to wait for the doctor to tell me. Thanks for your response! I will keep you updated.

              Acicone,
Please let me know what the doctor said!! This is happening to me and I am really freaking out. Its been several days, close to a week that I am having this light spotting. I only notice it on the toilet paper when I wipe but this has never happened before and there doesn't seem to be a cause. A week or so after my period, not vigorous sex, everything has pretty much been the same as your case.

Spotting mid-cycle can be attributed to many factors. In many women it happens due to ovulation and is entirely normal. It can however signify underlying conditions (polycystic ovary syndrome, pelvic inflammatory disease, uterine fibroids, uterine cancers) and should therefore be referred to a doctor for proper diagnosis. That is not to try and worry either of you, but if it is something you have never experienced before, it is worth getting checked out. There is also the onset of menopause which could be a factor (if you are of that age) and of course, spotting during pregnancy. So be sure to rule out both of those options before anything else.

So, if its only 2 days after intercourse, is it a possibility of pregnancy? Or is that too early?
