    Dark, sticky blood?

Some background: I'm a 22 year old college student, and I've been taking Aviane for birth control for over a year with pretty much no problems or irregularities until now. I've only had two "weird" months, where I skipped a day and took two pills the next day - both of those months, I had blood spotting for a week before my actual period, which my doctor said was normal. I usually use pads or tampons, only pads overnight, and I'm fairly sure the longest I've ever left a tampon in was about four hours - which is way longer than I usually leave one in. I am sexually active with a monogamous partner, and we use the pull-out method in addition to my daily Pill. Women on my mother's side of the family often get ovarian cysts and/or develop endometriosis at some point.

My symptoms: A week before my period was due to start, I started lightly bleeding, but it ranges from dark brown to dark red, and it is very thick. Occasionally it is thinner and redder, but it keeps returning to thick, muddy brown. I also had diarrhea for two days, a few days before the bleeding started/ I'm not sure if it was related to this or not (it may have been food poisoning - I ate some raspberries that I hadn't washed off). I do not have a fever or nausea, but I've been checking my temperature like crazy because I'm paranoid about toxic shock syndrome. I read some horror stories in other forums about how girls accidentally left a tampon in for a month without realizing it, and although I highly doubt I did something like that, I worry. I've also read that this can be a sign of miscarriage, although I'm pretty sure my period would be even thicker and paired with a fever if that were happening to me. I have taken my pills mostly regularly (with one or two days where I've had to take it 3-6 hours later than usual). Some forums say "that's just old blood coming out," but if that were true would this really be going on for a full WEEK?

I won't be able to see a doctor until later this week, unfortunately, so I'm desperately trying to do some research now.

Do I have endometriosis? A terrible tumor? A ruptured chocolate cyst? Cancer? Oncoming septic shock? Miscarriage? A stuck tampon? Or just silly health anxiety and a perfectly normal period doing perfectly normal [weird] things?

Brown is old blood. Likely your body is not fully listening to the birth control pills and trying to start your period early but being interrupted. It releases a little blood but doesn't have the uterine contractions to push it out and it turns brown before it gets there. If you are more active or your uterus contracts more you'll get some red. Personally when this happens I give in and just go to my inactive pills (technically mine are not totally inactive) and let my period happen. Then extend the next month with whatever was left from last month since otherwise I just fight with the spotting. However I'm on an extended cycle 3 month between periods bcp. If it keeps happening you may need to look at a different bcp. People react different to different ones. There are some I cannot take and some I love.

In herbal medicine, we consider dark blood (either brown or dark red) to be a sign of stagnation, especially when combined with pain, large clots, and a heavy feeling. If you'd like, you could try massaging some ginger-infused oil onto your lower belly during your bleeding time along with ginger tea to help move the stagnation.

This sounds pretty normal to me, but I'm glad you're going to get checked out. It's always better to err on the side of caution.

Brown is old blood. Just like chicken blood when it is fresh it is red, but after a few days it will become brown and smelly. Normally, a woman have their period 3, 5 or 7 days. But during the last 1 or 2 day, the blood is brown. I would highly recomend you to try out a type of sanitary napkin pad which can help to shorten your period duration. It helps to prevent blood clot , unwanted odor and bacteria growth. It is super thin and provide maximum comfort, you do not feel you are wearing any thing on. I myself try this pad out during my confinement , you can imagine during the 2 to 3 weeks , alot of bleeding and blood clot. I bought alot of Laurier, Sofy, Whisper nightuse pads. None can compare with this awesome pad. Interested you can email to me.
