Concerned
Hi, I am a new user. I'm 19 and have a question. I had the paragaurd Iud for over a year and got it removed 2 days after my period ended on the 19th of last month. I got tired of the horrible cramps and heavy bleeding with it and made an appointment to talk about alternatives. Turns out the iud was trying to push itself out. I started my oral birthcontrol New Year's Day. And had my period on the 14th of this month. I am still having bad cramping and heavy bleeding but today after having changed my tampon 30 prior I felt like it was falling out. I pulled it the rest of the way out and noticed a tissue like string with a dime size ball at the end of it. It was a greyish purple color and had blood on it. I have never seen or heard of anything like it before and am very anxious about it. I have had unprotected sex twice with my fiancé between my iud removal and starting the pill. And I am just wondering what this was and why it was there. Could it have been a miscarriage? -
Hi there, I'm sure you don't need me to tell you that you should have been using another form of contraception between having the IUD removed and going on BC pills. When you start having unprotected sex, you are immediately at risk of getting pregnant. So technically, yes you could be at risk of having had a miscarriage. However, that said, it is extremely common for women to experience heavy bleeds and clots after having an IUD removed. The ParaGard IUD causes an inflammatory reaction in the lining of the uterus and it can take a long time for it to return to normal once removed. However, it is important to speak to a qualified physician in these instances, so as to rule out any more serious complications. Speak to the doctor who dealt with you having the IUD removed and ask them for feedback and to keep an eye on your symptoms. But as a rule, clotting and heavy bleeding after the removal of an IUD is completely normal.
