    Your Mirena expierence/effectiveness?

I have had the Mirena now for 2 years. I got it due to horrible period symptoms. Nausea, diarrhea, moods etc.. once it settled down it was great! It stopped all the period symptoms and pretty much my period also. But here we are, 2 years in, and I have noticed I have started getting the nausea back pre 'period' as well as being snappy and more emotional! I am disappointed. I know its an effective contraception for 5 years. I was hoping all the other symptoms would stay away for that length of time also.

Has anyone else experienced this? TIA

Hi Echo, and welcome to WH.

Since no women have replied yet, I'll just comment that my wife is on her second Mirena (7 years total) and is very happy with it. But I know from reading here that not all women have a good experience with it.

Her periods were always pretty benign, even before Mirena. Not much in the way of uncomfortable symptoms, before, during or after. She now has almost nothing in the way of periods, although sometimes she gets something like a "mini period". She still gets a bit of that "I can feel my period coming" feeling most months, such as breast tenderness. But very minor.
I do not grow old; if I stop growing, I am old.

      Thx for the reply Baboy,

Yes, I refused the Mirena for quite some time after reading so many horror stories! But then I just got so completely over being rendered useless for a day or 2 each month that I thought, bugger it, I'll give it a go! If its a horror story I'll have it removed..

On a side note - never thought I'd be discussing periods with a random male haha

Hi, I had to have it connected with pre-cancerous issues for about 18 months before my gyn decided it wasn't helping; meanwhile I found that it really impacted negatively on my mental health which became even more apparent when it was removed. I read the horror stories as well and was thankful that some of those things weren't true for me, but it still ended up as a bad experience for me personally. Have you mentioned the return of some symptoms to your gyn or doctor yet?

Yes, I did to one. I asked if it loses effectiveness (not contraception) after a while and he gave the standard answer 'its good for 5 years'
