I think it's going to the extreme to say he can't have anything to do with the child. Right now he's acting in an odd manner. Consider this though, both of your lives have changed a lot. You're dealing with it well, seeking help, thinking of your child. He's not, unfortunately. He's probably nervous and unsure of what to do. He wants you, he doesn't want you. He's going to be a daddy, he's not ready for that. He wants to be a part of the child's life, but like you he's finding it hard to be just friends. Drinking helps dull the confusion. It makes those thoughts go away for a while. I agree with everyone else in that you should take some time to collect yourself. Both of you. Don't completely break off contact though. Don't see each other. Keep him updated on doctors appointments and other things involving the baby through email, maybe phone calls. If, after a month or so things haven't changed and he's still drinking heavily and acting strange, then sit down with him. A month, two months, should give you enough time to be composed, at the least. It's hard to break off a relationship when you still see each other all the time in the early days of the breakup. It seems as if the child is important to both of you. If you tell him you are concerned with how his behavior will affect the child's life, he'll probably change it. After all, they're new habits, and should be easy to break. Let him know what you're thinking. And again, get some breathing room.
