    Aside from the other good points by WC and rcoreyus consider he may also have some negative associating with the label girlfriend. His parents may not approve/my not have approved in the past under many circumstances (not sure of his age). He could have gotten heavily rediculed by a previous girl for calling her a girlfriend too soon. There could be a few things at work here.

      Thinking a bit like newhere.

      It's possible that he wants to be "sure" that it continues, that it is a relationship, he calls you his girlfriend privately. He may not want to introduce you that way and then you walk and find someone else and he ends up feeling like a twit.

      I'd say he's just being causious.
