    Part 1 the lies

Lying: This is the first major problem we have. This may have existed throughout the marriage but I am only really aware of it for the past 5 years or so. That is when a very serious betrayal happened. Everyone’s in laws are crazy and you just accept it as part of life, but she didn’t. She travelled out of state to their house with the kids a few times without me so she could get away to a warmer climate. Her last trip was disastrous and she felt she had to cut it short suddenly and did. This caused some serious problems and I took her side, she was my wife but hated the rift with my folks. I worked very hard and finally got everyone to agree to forget about the past, let’s move forward and be a family again. This worked great for a few weeks but then wife told me she wanted to send them another angry letter saying she is still upset about this and that and how could they do this or that. I said to her you must understand how important this is to me, I am begging you please do not send a letter. She looked me in the eyes and said “I love you and respect you and understand how important this is to you and won’t send a letter” then she immediately ran off to the post office and mailed such a letter. I had no idea and was verbally attacked by my brother a few days later how could she send a letter – what letter I knew nothing about it. She denied it at first and then fessed up. It might have taken me a day to get past it but then I said to her “Look you are my wife and I support you and will take your side the consequences with my family if you understand this hurt me worse than if you were sleeping around” and promise never to lie to me again. She agreed but the lies continued. Sometimes they were about tiny things. We have joint money and separate money and she would frequently have to run to the bank to make a deposit to cover a check because she liked to have a lot of cash on her. I volunteered to make a deposit for her the bank was near my office. She handed me 80 singles. I joked – what am I going to a strip club? I can’t take that in my wallet into NYC I won’t be able to sit. She replied that’s all she has, maybe a $5 bill in her purse and she doesn’t now how she was getting through till her next monthly check. This is despite my paying all the bills, just her mad money or spending on the kids after school. There had been a lot of lies before this so when she was in the shower I violated her space and looked in her purse – there was over $3,000 there in every denomination. I am doing her a favor and she punishes me by giving me singles? She has lied about the cost of items not small lies but huge ones. When her grandma was doing us a favor so we could borrow a few grand and pay off the 401K loan to take out a bigger one she lied to me saying no her grandma couldn’t give her the money yet but then suddenly came home with a Channel purse. I logged into her separate bank account and saw she paid about $2600 for it. WTF. Please understand when she lies about money and says she doesn’t know how she is going to get by I feel bad and make bad decisions based on the info presented. I may then juggle a bill till my next paycheck and give her $500. Her lies were not just about money they were about everything small and big. I reminded her that every lie takes me back to that betrayal where she looked me in the eyes and said she loved me and promised she wouldn’t send that letter. Every lie we repeated the conversation that I can’t live like that but they continued.
Here is another good one. She was prescribed strong narcotics – Percocet for her arthritic like condition . She would get 180 at a time. I had surgery on my arm a very painful ulna shortening and was prescribed weaker medicine Vikoden and would occasionally take one for pain. I was responsible saying my arm is killing me are we sure I don’t need to drive anymore tonight can I take a pill? She was stealing my pills. I long thought I had some missing and started locking them in a safe I only have access to, but on vacation after getting a fresh bottle of 20 noticed 3 were missing. She denied so I started to question my kids. After my oldest was in tears she finally admitted she took mine. More on drugs in a later post just deal with the lies here.
It finally got to a point where I tried saying if you don’t want to answer don’t just don’t lie. That didn’t even work. How messed up is it that a husband has to tell his wife not to answer instead of lying. The next progression was to stop asking questions.

Wow, she is spending more in mad money than I support myself and two kids on. A little hard for me to relate to. But it sounds like she may have some very compulsive behavior.

That was my first thought as well.

Also, I don't really want to broach this, but has any personality assessments been made?

          Problems part 2 and 3

Part 2 – disrespect and lack of appreciation:
It’s hard to list specific examples without it seeming picky, but there was a total lack of respect from her to me.
I work in NYC and am gone for approximately 12 hours a day.
When I get home my responsibilities were the dog, cooking for the family and helping with math homework. I didn’t mind, but there were things I did mind.
She was out with the kids a lot so she would tell me in advance when they needed dinner. That was fair, heck if I even knew before I got off the bus ride home I could stop and pickup something if I was tired, but when she didn’t say anything and I get home 7:45 and she welcomes me with “we are all starving” it was wrong.
When I cook I never got a thank you, in fact had to literally drag her to the table. Very frustrating to spend a bunch of time and then have her not get there to eat with the family while it’s hot.
I understand everyone’s life is hard and not asking for any sympathy but there just was no respect. I literally had to argue with her to stop vacuuming after 9:30 PM when I had bad insomnia. Then afterwards what did I get? Her snide remarks to the kids “it’s 9:25 I have to stop what I am doing and vacuuming before the bewitching hour” Now we are not talking about picking up crumbs I mean vacuuming the whole first floor of the house. Yes perhaps a little OCD but there was still room for some respect there.
Part 3 – not doing anything for me
No little things that can mean so much. I would always find myself coming home with something for her or doing something nice virtually every single day. Maybe it was free, maybe I just taped a show I know she would like even though I had no interest. Maybe I went to a 2nd or 3rd market to get something she likes even though she didn’t ask for it. I always had cards and gifts for whatever occasion for her. Gifts not out of obligation but out of love and caring. In return I got nothing. Many occasions I wouldn’t even get a card instead getting “well I was going to go to the mall this weekend and get you a gift”… She wasn’t bed ridden and didn’t work so if she can’t put forth a 5 minute effort to find a card for my birthday on time I don’t want an obligatory gift after the fact. I would have died a happy man if she bought me a dollar bottle of the special diet soda I like but have trouble finding. If she “stole” my car one day and took it to the carwash near where I parked for the bus I would have been amazed. I got nothing, nothing nothing. Didn’t want a present wanted something to feel loved, appreciated a card.. I lost a lot of weight 80 lbs and begged for some encouragement hey when I lose 10 pounds can you give me something, anything even a card or a handwritten note. I got nothing. I finally had to stop myself one day at the cell phone store. I saw an armband for her phone in the window and said to myself wow she would really like that. I actually was online to buy it and then put it back slapping myself saying why? Why should I do this for her.
          ---
Additionally the spending comes from her sense of entitlement - she has friends living in million dollar houses why can't she. She has friends driving new mercedes why can't she. She has friends with gold and diamond rolexes....

She does have a little OCD like I said but there was still room for respect

Sounds like a very one sided relationship. What does she do all day that she has no time to vacuum until bedtime?

I mentioned some OCD. Mostly she would either be running around the lake all day (jogging or running) on good days or in bed all day if the pain was bad. The OCD also had to do with the vacuuming she did vacuum several times during the day and found it relaxing.

But don't get me wrong I know she is a kind person and not evil, I am just presenting the details of what happened to us as requested.

My big faults in the relationship was that I subconsciously pulled away and didn't hold her hand in public, want to do lots of things with her and enjoyed time alone more than with her. This was a side effect of my being mistreated but nonetheless something I did wrong.

Wow, this is really disheartening. I find it amazing that you are still sticking in there. Like WC said is does sound pretty one sided.

People who have the kind of sense of entitlement that she has are hard people to get along with, not to mention the lies, disrespect and everything else.

What does she do that makes you happy?

I realize we are getting your side, but I'm not sure who can fault you for pulling away from her after being treated like this.

Has your wife gone to a doctor or psychiatrist to talk about her money squandering, compulsive lying, and other odd compulsive behavior? Or does her councellor talk to her about these issues? As WC said, this seems rather compulsive....

I can see how you are frustrated, this sounds like she may have a disorder that she needs help controlling than it sounds like she is blantantly trying to disrespect you.

I could be wrong, but from what you have written, her behavior seems odd...
