Girlfriend would like keep friendships with men she has had sex with before me.

Hello everyone, I just Googled a similar question and am glad I found this forum

When we were dating, my girlfriend invited over to my house a guy friend she has had for 5-7 years, she apparently wanted us to meet and I thought and assumed they were just friends and only friends, on appearance alone I find this man to be no threat lol. On character, I definitely find this man to be of no threat. The night we met, I noticed that he wasn't really into conversation with me and I found that "interesting" considering he was allegedly a "close friend" of hers for 5-7 years. That's not how I act when I meet new love interest of my close friends.

However, I found out later that they had sex once, she never lied to me about it but wasn't upfront to clarify the extent of their past until I asked directly months later. She claims to only of had one sexual experience with this person, let's call this guy Douche, and that she regrets that it ever happened. She tells me that her and Douche even kinda dated for exactly one week, but that she wasn't into him at all and so put him back in the "friend zone" where he's been ever since. She told me that she knew he liked her and that that she still knows he likes her to this day. All our mutual friends think the same, it's fairly obvious.

So after all these years, Douche still likes my girlfriend, I even know this because I've seen how he's all over her Facebook page, desperately "liking" and commenting on everything she posts, he's such a Douche. But my girlfriend tells me Douche is in the friend zone and he has allegedly remained there for years and I do believe her btw.

She has had several boyfriends since starting up a friendship with Douche and when I asked how serious their friendship is, she said it goes in "sperts." I asked how her other boyfriends handled the situation and she said something along the lines of when's she with someone, that's when the friendship wasn't as close. I assume she runs to Douche's company when she's not in a serious relationship because they like to party and go to Raves together, the guys an "E-Tard" from what her friends told me.

Considering that she drops the friendship when she wants, I believe a respectable man, who's not a Douche, would say something along the lines of "Yeah lady, I notice you drop our friendship when you get with someone and come running back to me when your feeling down or single? I'm sorry but I don't do back burner friendships." Obviously Douche has never come close to gaining some semblance of this type of respectability. He's desperately hoping she'll give in again someday, in my opinion.

Since we have gotten together, out of respect for me and what makes me feel comfortable, she has avoided hanging out with Douche, of course Douche is mad about this and feels that it's because of insecurity that a friendship of 5-7 years is no more. This is expected from a Douche who will happily be confined into the friend zone and will wait and hope for the opportunity to catch a vulnerable rebound, or that she may "one day change her mind and see how much of a "great Douche"" kinda guy I am."

I know guys like this and it's sad that some men have to resort to such tactics and have literally no shame or sense of self worth.

I asked my girlfriend what she thinks about the phrase, "What's good for the goose, is good for the gander." My girlfriend agree's with that statement and has admitted that she wouldn't be comfortable if the roles were reversed. To me, it's so **** obvious and it's common sense of respect, plus it's literally the "Golden Rule" (treat others that way you want to be treated). It ****es me off that she couldn't of figured this obvious SH%^ out before I had to mention it and practically spoon feed it to her, but whatever, I'll gladly take that we see eye to eye on it now. I know there's no point in continuing a friendship with a woman I've literally had my penis inside of, while I'm trying to focus and pursue a meaningful, thoughtful, considerate relationship with a new girlfriend, for me to expect my girlfriend to be comfortable with that situation would be selfish and inconsiderate at the very least.

In my opinion, it's simply NOT appropriate people, period!! When I have a relationship, I think of this woman as potential marriage material and I cannot imagine my future wife wanting to continue to hang out with, and be friends with, another man whom she "gave in" to a sexual experience with before we met and especially knowing that this man, if given the opportunity, wouldn't hesitate to pounce. It would be inappropriate for me to do the same thing to my future wife or current girlfriend.

Maybe it would be different if nobody felt, her included, that this Douche had feelings for her, but that's not the case, and frankly, I'm not sure it would be that different. It just feels inappropriate. I trust her, I really do, like I said, I do not find this guy to be a threat at all and if she were to cheat on me or break up with me for Douche, I would find it comical that she would lower her standards to that level, a Douche Level if you will lol.

The guys such a Douche that he's upset with her about the situation, but come on man, if he had any class, he'd understand what's right and not right and he would be happy for her that she's happy now and is trying to do everything reasonable in her power to make her relationship work, which it is. Douche thinks I should be comfortable with her being friends with a guy who "loves" my girlfriend and is hoping and praying she gives in again, and I know he wouldn't hesitate if she wasn't of right mind either; drunk, sad/down, on ecstasy or whatnot.

In full disclosure, she hasn't made this a big deal at all and the title of this thread is misleading, she doesn't want to continue to be really close friends with this guy and has even told me that looking back on it now, she see's he's a Douche that prays on vulnerable women, he did the same thing to a girlfriend of hers when she was feeling down about a relationship. My girlfriend now knows, what I clearly saw from the beginning about Douche, that he pursues "friendships" with attractive women and knows that if he waits in the friend zone long enough, they'll hopefully give in one day.

    Let me know your thoughts.

Is it "INSECURITY" or is it just what's right?? Thank you.

Hmmmmm.... Well.... I think it depends on the relationship between the two people (the current lovers) and the friendship between the two people (the past lovers).

I wouldn't say it is ALWAYS inappropriate and to me, in this case, I don't really see it. She has zero feelings for him, so really, him hanging on is his problem. If you are insecure about their friendship, then out of respect for you, she should end it. If he is being well, a douche, about you and your relationship with her, then she needs to talk to him about it out of respect for you.

If the two of you are comfortable, confident and secure in your relationship, I don't really see a problem with her being "friends" (I say that loosely because he is obviously a "back burner friend" to her and she really doesn't give a rats behind about him) with him because there really is nothing there. Their intimate relationship was so brief that it is pretty much non existent. It seemed more or less like an oopsies on her part. I wouldn't hold it against her, she realized they were better off as friends, no harm no foul there.

However, like I said... It all depends on YOU and YOUR relationship with her and out of respect for your feelings, she should take the appropriate action if she cares. And, regardless if you had to feed her all this information or not, that should have no bearing on it. People need to communicate, try leaving out the assumptions. There should never be a "she should have known" or yada yada yada, you should always communicate your feelings in a relationship, don't leave it up in the air. Everybody has different feelings on EVERYTHING, the only way she will know yours and you hers is to bring them up.

The word "insecure" stands out to me, because I trust her, I really do and I know she wouldn't hurt me, well I've taken that leap of faith that she wouldn't hurt me. I also don't find this guy as a threat at all, honest to god I don't.

I just feel like, what's the point of her continuing this on again off again friendship with this guy?? I'd figure that if sex was ever involved then it's always inappropriate, people don't just "have sex," it's a conscious effort or else people would have sex with anyone and everyone everytime they are drunk or sad or feeling lonely, and that's not the case. People only have sex with people they want to have sex with and sometimes do so when intoxicated because they've let their barriers down. People don't have drunken sex with jut anyone and everyone, in my opinion.

I also feel that a friendship doesn't exist when one person really wants it to be more than friends, which is the case here. That's not a friendship, that's him being forced in a take it or leave it friendship because he's not getting what he initially and STILL wants. Just seems inappropriate to continue talking to this guy when she's in a committed, respectful relationship.

But maybe I'm not mature enough to see that it doesn't matter, but I find it nearly impossible to see how that's considerate and respectful.

Your are right... There is no point in her continuing on this friendship. In a way she is leading him on. Keeping him in the wings, knowing he will ALWAYS be there for her. That isn't right. She has seen that now and will hopefully be taking the steps to end this friendship with him. However, I do disagree in saying that is sex was EVERY involved that it is ALWAYS inappropriate. There are plenty of instances where people are great friends, been friends forever, then decide that MAYBE, just MAYBE they should get intimate to see if they should become lovers, bf/gf, etc. They get along so well, why wouldn't they be great together intimately. Well, sometimes that isn't the case, sometimes, they are such great friends that the sex is left being awkward. They both agree that it wasn't for the best and that they should just be friends. That is fine, neither of them want anything more, they tried it and it didn't work. I don't think they future partners should begrudge them that. If it worked, they would have still been together. At least they were adult enough to realize that it didn't work and that they were better off as friends and allow each other to find someone else that works, yet still being the friends they were before the sex.

That I agree with you whole heartedly on. Like I said above, she is leading the poor sap on. She needs to tell him that for his own sanity and for the benefit of her relationship with you that she needs to put an end to the friendship between the two of him. Ultimately it is not fair to him, lol, he's just stupid enough to hang back in the wings hoping his time will come.

Like I said, I don't really think it has anything to do with maturity. Just comfort level. If you are not comfortable with it, then so be it and she needs to understand this. If she wouldn't be comfortable with you doing the same, well, then, enough said, she knows what she needs to do.

But even in the 70's we knew our " Territory " , yes we tested the waters, and all had Fun at the Lake, Skinny Dipping and whatnot . Some had One time Hook ups, others were No Touch only Friends kind .
But.. If we ran into someone in the next Semester , that we knew or had " Did the Diddy ",with.. it was no big Deal. It was we tried a " relationship " and it didn't Work well , So moved on, treadled other " waters ", Gossiped, Both Guys and Girls .. and Again Moved On .

          Just a Note, here
My Ex and First I ever Did the " Diddy " with, My son's father ( yep the 37 year old one ). We split in 1976, Son was born in 1975. Joey , still called me, still loved me, used to call me in the Middle of the Night, even while he was Married to another woman.. While playing the Records.. Yes Record, American Graffiti and the Paul McCartney , Red Rose Speedway, song POWERCUT " lol.

Telling me I was his First Love and Thanking me for his Son. For standing by him and still Caring about Him.. Both Him ( Joey and My Son ).. Then his wife would get on the phone. And we would talk. He Passed away 3 years ago. We were " Parents and Friends All those years ". I miss him. she does too.

So, Charlie.. Having a Man still have a " Crush " or Care for the Woman you now Love and Loves you .. Is a Compliment. To you & Her ..

Calling him a "Douche " is a bit Harsh, you should welcome him, both you and her.. Maybe try to help him find a Woman similar to Yours . She and you can Let him know She is Yours and You are Hers .

So they had Sex. Once. If she wanted him Now, she would still be with him. Time to hit the " Maturity and Confidence " part of the Wheel of Fortune . You know, the Bankrupt one or the Free Spin one ?

Make sure their are no " Hidey spots in your past too ". Some Ex~ gal may run into you and Eyes may Sparkle and GF's Eyes will be Green or Red ..

Love and Trust of who you are with NOW is the Free Spin. The one that can Bankrupt is the one where You Question, Your Love or Her Love. Jealousy has no Room in Security..

Hopefully my future wife isn't still very close friends with a member of the opposite sex that she had a relationship with but who both now realize they're better off as just close friends and nothing more, if I end up in this situation, I'd have no choice but to reach that level of maturity to be OK with this, if she truly valued that man's friendship.

I'm glad we see eye to eye on almost everything now, your insight and advice is truly appreciated. Thank you!

I applaud people like you and your husband who can do all that you've done regarding a similar situation. However, in my particular situation they only had a on again off again friendship, with her keeping him in the "friend zone" the entire time (except for that one week), nothing close to what you're describing.

If I took your advice then I should be comfortable with every guy she's ever slept, who's bridge was not burned, calling at all hours of the night talking to her and trying to stay in her life just in case things don't work out between her and I.

Call it "High Schoolish" "Childish" "Immaturity," but I think we're comparing apples to oranges here.

That is exactly it... It makes it harder when one still has stronger feelings than the other. I mean, you do really got to kind of feel sorry for him, right? Think about if you were in that position... Left pining after some girl that just didn't return your feelings, it would be a rough road to travel, especially if she kept you in the "friend zone" as a convenience.

Hahaha.... You just have to remember that they didn't work for a reason... Right? I mean, everyone has a past, not everyone's past is sweet smelling roses. You just have to realize that she would be with you now for a reason and that all her past choices led her to you one way or another and be happy with that.

I beleive in that the love relationship should be on top of any friendship that is unaccepted by one of the partners as long as he/she made it clear it is harming the relationship , also if it involves doubts of attraction or admiration in the past or currently from that friend , and when it is crossing the limits of friendship from the point of view of the partner refusing it .. and btw I am talking in general i.e. if ur gf was in your place and you have a female friend like the above male friend I will say the same ..
So in short , you have to set your limits in this relationship, what is unacceptable from your side - as long as it has a strong reason like the above - is to be made clear to your partner and she has to decide on her own what she wants , as problem like this has to be cut off from the roots and not to be settled by compromises or setting limits to the long term friend which he will not follow , especially it has been poisoning this relationship for long .. that's instead of going through circles of arguments and promises which leads to the same ending point of fights and disagreements over the same unsolved issue .. plus "where there is a will there is a way" .. But please remember that she also have the right to do the same with you in case you have over limits friendships , it should be mutual to be successful ad balanced , as may be you are open too in your friendships which is giving her the freedom to keep this friend in her life too ..

The Bible is my instruction book and it says about marriage, “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.” -- Genesis 2:24

My guess is the modern interpretation would include her exes too.
