Need some help and advice please

Sorry for the long story but I really need some impartial advice.

About 4 months ago, my friend Katherine told our friendship group that her boyfriend of 3 months had just broken the news that he had twins from a previous marriage. We were all shocked but comforted her and asked what she was going to do. She had decided to stay with him but was worried that we would judge her for this decision. I supported her and she was grateful, however she said that our other friend Eleanor had reacted badly to the situation and had told her to walk away while she still could as he'd withheld this information from her, which wasn't a good sign. Katherine said this really upset her and she didn't like talking to Eleanor about it.

About a month later I was on a night out with Eleanor when we got talking about Katherine. Eleanor said she was worried as Katherine never spoke to her anymore and that the two of them had become distant. This is the point at which I should have kept my mouth shut, but I didn't. I wanted to try and fix their friendship and help them become close again. So I suggested that perhaps the reason Katherine had become distant was because of the way Eleanor has reacted to the news about her boyfriend. As soon as this came out of my mouth I knew I had made a mistake. I began to backtrack and tried to cover myself by trying to make out that it wasn't a big deal. Eleanor became angry and asked me what I knew and how. I said "Katherine just mentioned that your reaction was different to ours. And that you thought her boyfriend had lied to her and like her ex did." Eleanor became even more angry and said that Katherine had twisted her words and she had not said that. At this point I felt awful and realised I had made things a hundred times worse. I tried to move the conversation on but the damage was done.

The next morning, this problem eating me up inside, I rung Katherine and told her what had happened. I couldn't remember exactly what I had said the night before, as the panic had made me forget. She was absolutely furious with me for mentioning her relationship and betraying her trust. She told me not to talk to her for a while and that she could never trust me fully again. She kept saying over and over again "Did you say anything else? What did you say?" but I couldn't remember so I just told her what I could.

Months on, mine and Katherine's relationship is not the same, but we are talking and still hanging out, while we avoid the subject. I don't know if she had ever talked to Eleanor about what happened, but they don't seem as close anymore either.

This problem is eating me up inside - The two main things I need help with are:

    1. Is this as bad as I'm making out? Should I feel so terrible?
    2. I worry that one day they will discuss it and they will think I have twisted their words and ruined their friendship.

Sorry for the long story, but I really need some perspective on this.

Whenever there are more than two persons in a circle of friends, and whenever confidences are exchanged at separate times or conversations take place outside the hearing of one of the parties, you will have conflict. You, unfortunately, were in the middle this time and have been called out on it. The best thing you could do is to go to your friend, tell her that you are sorry she and Eleanor aren't as close anymore, and that you and she seem to have a bit of a wall up. Apologize, assure her that you are there for her as is her other friend.

Apart from this, you can't do anything more, except keep out of the middle of any drama in the future.
That which we forget may as well never really happened.

It sounds like Katherine can't deal with an honest opinion from her friends but just wants a bunch of "Yes-men" or "Yes-women" around.

Eleanor gave an honest opinion and Katherine rejected her.

I guessing that Eleanor wasn't so much upset with you, but irritated that Katherine couldn't take a contrary opinion.

How are things with Eleanor and you?

The words I tend to live by are that no good deed goes unpunished. You were trying to do the right thing and, as happens in my life, it backfired. My instincts are like yours -- to try to get people to resolve their differences. Interestingly, you didn't write that Katherine had asked you to keep her reaction to the conversation between she and Eleanor a secret.

As to your first question -- no, what you did was not horrible. You had the best of intentions. I doubt that the conversation with Katherine and Eleanor did not make anything worse. It just brought things more into the open. The issue dividing them is the boyfriend, not you.

Don't fear a reconciliation. If Katherine is still seeing her boyfriend and things are good, maybe she will be able to forgive Eleanor. The drama was unnecessary. Each of you were trying to protect Katherine in different ways -- you by lending support and friendship and Eleanor by giving a very important warning.

Rebuild the trust and friendship with Katherine as best you can. The hurt will eventually go away.

Why not get together with the two of them (all together) and talk it out. Enough time has passed that you all should be able to discuss it calmly and without the emotions taking over.
Do this if you feel confident you can maintain the friendly nature and keep it from escalating.

Start it off with your apology and be honest about your feelings of regret.

At this point, their friendship may be irreparable, and that isn't your fault. Your friendship also may be unsalvageable but I think an open dialogue is the answer, rather than these two talking here, these other 2 here...just sit down and talk it through.

It may not be smth you're comfortable taking the lead on, but it's something to consider.

Thank you to all of you for the excellent advice. It really has helped to make me feel better about this situation.

Things between Eleanor and I are fine but my worry is that one day the whole situation will blow up all over again, and they'll go back to that night and claim that I twisted Katherine's words and ruined things. I guess what I'm looking for is closure, but without sitting down with both of them (which I don't think I could handle) I guess I will just have to wait for it to fade away.

            Thank you all again,

            C x

              Carol,

Hopefully time will give everyone perspective. If it occurs, make sure the three of are talking about it together. You will need to be confident in your view that you were only trying to help both of them. But listen to all perspectives and learn from them.

              Good luck.
