My SO was like this (and to some extent still is). We emailed for a while before we saw each other romantically and she told me that she never liked to talk on the phone for fear of the awkward silences. She and I were never at a loss of things to say because I wanted to know all about her and sometimes controlled the conversations to prevent the dead space.
There are a couple of suggestions. First, conversations have a natural lull and you do not have to fill up every space with words. Enjoy the game and the people watching.
Second, ask questions. Listen to what he is telling you and ask about him. People love to talk about themselves.
Have some stories about you prepared. What do you want him to know about you, your family, some cute stories, about your schooling, job etc. just think about some topics.
Relax. Enjoy him. If he asks why the lull, just tell, him you are soaking it all in."The only consistent feature of all of your dissatisfying relationships is you." Despair.com "Dysfunction"Comment
