Valentine's Day was never a big deal to me, but I would usually do something small for my husband. I also do a little something for close friends & mentors. I think it's more than a romantic holiday. My husband had the same idea. Usually a card with something nice written inside and some special chocolates, which were a big hit with me.
Generally speaking tho, I think the best gifts are those that involve some thought, and some consideration of that person's values, as someone said. This past Christmas, someone gave me a cake plate that I'd been wanting for ages, but couldn't find. I'd mentioned it only once to this friend, and they searched until they found it. THAT was what meant so much-knowing they'd spent so much time really trying to find what I'd wanted-specifically, not just any cake plate...I'll treasure it always, because it spoke to how much that person listened & values what I say & what I find interesting. It spoke to how much they value ME, and our relationship.
I'm a bit odd tho. I really don't mind practical presents. If it's something that makes my life easier, such as a crock pot or a new iron...I have no problem with a gift that keeps on giving, by taking some chore & making it easier or more efficieint.Comment

I think Valentine's Day is a big deal. There is nothing wrong with a day on the calendar whose purpose is to promote the expression of love and appreciation for your spouse, partner, friend etc. While I agree that people close to us should always be celebrated, a special day to in the middle of winter is a nice touch. IMHO, feeling unappreciated is one of the biggest marriage and relationship killers.
I agree with Kitty that practical presents can be wonderful and even romantic. My SO is an OCD neat freak. She loved the floor steamer I bought her two Christmases ago precisely because it made her cleaning work easier. It's not the type or expense of the present but the thought behind it. It's what makes people feel appreciated. Like Kitty's example of the cake plate, it's hard not to love a person (romantically or as a friend) when they go to such lengths to make us happy. I hope you all had an enjoyable Valentine's Day."The only consistent feature of all of your dissatisfying relationships is you." Despair.com "Dysfunction"Comment
