I've used meetup too and really enjoyed it.

I'm like you, I guess I'm not someone who gives people that warm fuzzy feeling either. I'm odd i guess. and fun isn't my first objective at work or in life...and for most people that's all they seem to live for. Makes me crazy honestly, at work.
I tend to be more quiet until I know someone. I'll ask questions and engage in discussions but I don't get too personal at first.

I've had one friend for about 15 years now. I have other friendships but none that are quite so lengthy or close.
I've decided part of it is my mannerisms and my personality. And part of it is just that, most people don't stick around long enough to get to know me. They're looking for superficial friendships that are more about what you want to do on a Saturday night, than discovering WHO someone really is and how we can add to the satisfaction in each others lives.
I've had those over the years too...but I guess it's not my objective.

I tend to be more quiet until I'm comfortable with someone.

So, I don't think for me it's not knowing how, but not putting in the effort, or maintaining an awareness. I know myself and I do realise the first impressions people often have of me...so I don't always go the extra way to reach out to them.

Feel like I've rambled a bit here....

My suggestion would be to find some activities you really like and go do them for the fun of it. Don't concentrate on trying to make friends, enjoy the moment
and the people who enjoy it like you will connect. It'll happen naturally.
Don't forget that people in general are more stressed and nervous about new people today that it makes it harder.
I'm sure it's not you and with patience, the right people will come along!
