During my chemo, I found out he was having an affair....

About a year ago I saw an email that was suspicious, I confronted him, and he reasoned it out, justified it, and I believed him. He said he would not email her again. He used this as an issue in me that he felt was part of a reason he did not feel like we, after being together for 22 yrs, should have "more" together.

Then I was rediagnosed with Breast Cancer about 5 months afterward. He had several incidents of anxiety/panic attacks, even though I was the one diagnosed with cancer. He made attempts to work around my chemo schedule with his on-going business trips, but was not outwardly as "moved" as you would expect a husband to be during a health crisis like this.

Then, on the last round of chemo, I came across explicit pornograpic photos of him and her on his computer, that dated back for almost a year, all over the world, on the business trips he had been taking.

He said I should have expected something, since I was the one always pointing out that he need to show more compassion and support for me, and he was clearly not able to give it to me. He blames his looking outside the marriage, on past incidents between us of untrustworthiness, way back at the start of our marriage. Incidents we went through therapy to fully deal with.

He agreed to therapy again, but I found out recently he has still been communicating with her, even after he and I called her together and emailed her together with the message that she and he were over. He doesn't want to leave me, says he can't imagine his life without me in it. But is sulking and very ambivilent (sp?) about promising me he is not going to communicate with her, since they had such a long relationship and he feels it is unrealistic of me to expect he turn it off like a switch.

Our therapist feels he is asking for me to wait for him to come to a decision on if he wants to stay or go, and and his new sense of living an honest life and telling me he is still communicating with her should be met by me in an understanding of his honesty.

I'm not done with my cancer issues, and leaving him right now is just not something I'm able to do, not to mention, I need what little he has in way of his supporting me, both financially and emotionally, when he chooses to be caring.

I'm stuck, I feel he won't break it off with her becasue he wants to know if it can go anywhere, but he can't explore that with her as long as I'm an anchor around his leg. But I can't turn my lovefor him off over night either, and as horrible as it has been to slowly discover the intimate details fo a year long affair, during a time of life when his lies have rocked me to the core of falling off the edge, I still find myself wanting to make it work with him.

How long can I wait, how long should I wait, for him to make a decision? Part of me thinks he wants me to end it with him, so he doesn't look so bad to everyone else.

First off, I'm sorry to hear such a sad story, my heart goes out to you.

I don't think you should wait another second. You've had some close calls with your health and been through a lot. It's time to live your life for you. (your husband has already been doing this for himself) I know it's easier said than done, especially after 22 years, but honestly, you need to leave this man. Now.

I'm so sorry for what you are going through. In your post you say:

"He blames his looking outside the marriage, on past incidents between us of untrustworthiness, way back at the start of our marriage. Incidents we went through therapy to fully deal with."

was that you or him or both of you? maybe for him it wasnt really dealt with.

There is no such thing as a "blame" game..

That is what your husband is doing... Your therapist is right, he is not being "honest" with himself.

He did the deed, he had the best of both worlds. A wife at home, of some 22 years, and a companion on his business trips.

He chose to do this. He decided it would be what "he" wanted.

He chose to continue having a wife, and an affair.

He can't turn around and try to put the blame on something mis-trustful that happened 22 years ago...

This is his doing.. Not as a result of something that happened so long ago that most would forget....

It is selfish.. Off course, he doesn't want the marriage to end, 22 years is a long time, finances come into play, children I assume regardless if they have left the nest, it's so much easier to just sit ... but make no mistake, he will not let go of this affair either, and if he did, he would seek another.

He has had the taste, he can't be honest with himself that he has enjoyed doing so, rather wants to play the "blame/game".

He would want you to do it, he then could feel sorry for himself and continue that blame.

You are at your lowest in life, a life threatening scare, alot to deal with emotionally, physically and any support at the moment is what you need, as well as not worrying about what to do, you know what you would do if you were spirited, up and feeling good about yourself, you would say you are worth more.

        You are.

Just take the support you need, (you take) it's your turn.

When you are ready, and feeling alot better have a little think if you can accept being half of a woman, instead of a whole.

Because no matter how old you are, there is always, always someone out there that will want to treat you as a whole, when you are ready.

No point having to work for something that he can not accept is something dramatically wrong, something un-acceptable.

If you want to go off and pretend that you are single, then be single, don't expect a woman to stay at home, cook for you and clean when you return and love you, whilst you want to act 50/50 because of selfishness.

That is how I see a man whom can not admit what he did was hurtful & wrong.

Take care, concentrate on getting yourself better at this stage.

Don't know if this will be any help but I was the other side with a spouse who had cancer. I knew I should get out of the relationship but he'd had several health problems and then the cancer with a very large tumor and intense chemo. I felt I couldn't kick him when he was down, so I stayed and tried to be supportive. I didn't have an affair though and he was cancer free when I left. He hates me now.

I guess my point is that cancer or not, some things have to be dealt with. Your emotional state is important to your health, only you can decide if this relationship is worth the grief. Is your life better with him than it would be without him?
