Mental illness is not always easy to identify, and it can show up suddenly at any age for no decernable reason. The worse news is, it is nearly impossible to get a loved one help. The freedom of the individual out weighs the wishes of the family. If the individual who is suffering from mental illness can not be persuaded to get help, there is next to nothing you can do about it. It does not get better without help. Love is only able to do so much. I would recommend the National Association for the Mental Ill. They probably have classes and support groups for you in your area.
While you undoubtably wish to stick it out and be there through thick and thin, you have minor aged children, and they come first. I'm sorry, but they do. You would not leave them with a mentally baby sitter, so don't leave them alone with their father. Next time he throws you out, get out, stay out and tell him you aren't coming back unless he is willing to get help himself.
Some of my favorite people on the planet are seriously mentally ill. I understand your relunctance to leave. If you can get him into a group home situation where you can visit him daily, that would be best.
