I think I am experiencing an allergic reaction , but there is like no info online about it.

So, I have been on nuvaring for around 5 days. I am having cramps, my left contact wont stay in place, I have even tried a new contact, I am itchy all over, and got hives all over my arms, shoulders, chest, and back.

I'm not sure if I am allergic to it though, What do you guys think?

It sounds like an allergic reaction i would suggest that you go see your doctor immediately! the hives and everything is not a good sign, go see your doctor.

The Nuvaring does release hormones.
And this definitely sounds like an allergic reaction!
Go to your OB/GYN doctor as soon as you can!

I was on Nuvaring for about 6 months without any complications about a year ago but didn't make it back to the dr to renew my rx. I finally went and started back on it right away. About 2 weeks later, I woke up covered in hives on both arms and legs. (Can't forget the date because I live in the Houston area and it was the same night as hurricane Ike!) I have been through 2 rounds of steroids, 1/2 a bottle of Zyrtec, 1/2 a bottle of rx Pepcid (did you know this is actually an antihistamine?!), THREE large boxes of Benadryl, 3 large bottles of ant-itch lotion and 2 large tubes of rx steroid cream! Yes, they had me on all 3 antihistamines at one time.....I don't know how I've managed to stay awake and functioning! All of this for 21 days and TODAY is the first day I've felt half way normal again. I did have a couple of itchy spells but was able to manage with only a couple of antihistamines today instead of every FOUR hours around the clock! Both my allergist and my dermatologist have been completely stumped and after a biopsy, they truly think it was from the Nuvaring. I LOVE Nuvaring from my previous experience - I don't use it for birth control but rather to manage painful periods. My only other viable option was surgery and I'm just not ready for that. Unfortunately , the only way to know for sure is to finish these steroids and then wait a month or two and try again.....which scares me to death because I think I will have a nervous breakdown if I have to go through this again! I actually had BLISTERS covering my hands and feet! The rest of my arms and legs were covered in whelts. Now I am down to just trying to heal all the wounds and peeling skin and only have a small rash (like heat rash) that appears a couple of times a day all the way down the undersides of my arms. Soooo.....did you speak with your dr or come to any conclusions?

nuvaring allergy

Just wanted to update for anyone who might stumble across this thread in the future. I was off Nuvaring for 2 full months while I let my itching, hives and rash completely subside. I was also taking an herbal supplement and it turns out the drs decided it was that instead of the ring that I was reacting to. WRONG. I finally started Nuvaring again and within 2 weeks, I had a single blister on my finger. I decided to wait another day and not jump to conclusions. The next day I had hives on one wrist. I take Zyrtec daily for my allergies and I was a couple of hours overdue so I took it, the hives subsided and I decided to wait again. The next evening, I was shopping and realized I had the same fine rash on the entire underside of my forearm that I had for weeks during my first reaction. That was enough for me! I quickly found the ladies room and got that thing out! Took a good dose of antihistamines and sure enough, haven't seen another sign. So if you have any type of itching or hives, TAKE IT OUT and notify your doctor! (BTW - I never had issues in the female region, which I thought was very odd - just head to toe itching, hives and rash, particularly on hands and feet) Good luck to everyone else - I'm done with Nuvaring!

Nuvaring Hives

I started nuvaring 2 1/2 weeks ago. Within the first week I broke out in hives on my hips and thighs. I contacted my dr who told me that the reaction is not from the nuvaring. I have never been allergic to anything and I do not have sensitive skin. By the end of the 2nd week I had a rash all over except my face, hands and feet. It looks like hives all over my thighs, arms, hips...on my chest it looks like a heat rash. I finally pulled the ring out today and I will never put it back in again!!

Perhaps the allergic reaction was not from the hormone, but the plastic used to manufacture the ring itself?

Thank you very much for this post. I have been off of the Nuva Ring for about 2 months due to being on steriods for poison Ivy. About a week ago I started back on the Nuva ring 4 days later I had what looked to be a heat rash on my thigh area. I treated with A & D ointment and it only got worse spreading to the back of my legs, lower back, arm pit area, forearms and little blisters on my fingers and feet. I was courisous as to whether it had something to do with the birthcontrol. I have a doc apt today, I printed this out to take with me. Thank you again. I will update with what the doctor tells me.
