my doctor said they like to put them in just after your period ends. i had a baby on july and ask him to put one in on my 6 week check up, he said to wait till after my period comes, but i usually get it after 6 or 7 months, so he went ahead and did it,. hopes this helps

Hi! I just had my IUD placed today. It was uncomfortable but not too bad. My doctor actually had me come in on the second day of my period so he could put it in. I don't think that you have to wait any longer than your next period to have one placed. You should call your doctor and ask about getting one, at least a few weeks before since they may have to order it for you (mine had to be ordered). It literally only took maybe 5 minutes to have it in and I don't notice it at all. I haven't even had an any unusual cramping or anything. Just make sure you are not at risk for pelvic infections or ectopic pregnancy or it is not safe to get one. Good Luck!
